Come down to the Palomino in Calgary before 4 pm to see Corb Lund and sign the Water Not Coal petition!
Just heard your CBC report, Don! Excellent reporting & incredibly exciting! Well done as always!
“The chicks love it”! Spring migration has just begun, but it’s not just about bird Identification, it’s about watching behaviour too. Check out the “head-throw kick”!

A Ring-billed Gull flies against the blue Alberta sky.
A California Gull flies against the blue Alberta sky.
An American Herring Gull flies against the bright Alberta sunshine.
Gulls have now returned in meaningful numbers, such that for the next 9 months they should be a daily sight for everyone living in this province.
This morning's walk featured the core trifecta: Ring-billed, California, Herring Gulls. #birds #AB
Very sad news to hear of the passing of Dr. Birutė Galdikas. She famously led the studies of Orangutan much in the same way as her primatology peers Dr Goodall and Dr Fossey.

Chris, Dee & I very much enjoyed your presentation! It was especially interesting to see the Serengeti/North American list & drawings of the now extinct megafauna that used to exist in our grasslands…..not that long ago! Excellent presentation idea!
"A group of landowners fighting the construction of a massive motorsport racing resort northeast of Calgary have won a court victory."
..Environmental Appeals Board dismissed that concern in 2024 for lack of evidence Rebecca Schulz agreed with that decision. Shock!

We’ll be watching! 🤗
I spent an hour with this little 16 month old baby mountain gorilla in Uganda, last month. I’ll be premiering a video edit on him here in Calgary, as well as a number of other segments during this evening presentation:

I hope to see you there!
For winter wildlife to survive a Canadian winter requires abilities of Olympian proportions! (Think Wolverine!). I went down this “thought rabbit-hole” after visiting the National High Altitude Training Centre in Uganda last week. (8 minutes listening time)

A male American Robin perches on a snow covered fence.
Two things showed up last night #YYC - American Robins + snow. The first few robins that arrive tend to be the bright chested, black-headed males. Despite the white stuff, dried berries and crabapples should provide food until the temps turn. #birds
After an incredible month in Uganda, we are heading home tonight. “The Pearl of Africa” has certainly lived up to its name. Incredible wildlife, wonderful people, and remarkable green landscapes.
Proposed tundra swan hunting season on Prairies prompts concern from hunter. Hunt could lead to sensitive trumpeter swans being mistaken for tundra swans. cbc.ca/news/canada/... #CdnSci #ecology #biology #science #SciChat
This just went live yesterday! If you are around & in Calgary on March 26, it would be fantastic to see you there!

Bonjour!
Want to read/hear the good news about the Alberta Bald eagle population in French? (5 min segment)

Just published! A good news nature story: Here’s why bald eagle sightings have soared across Alberta | CBC News www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
You are in the right group of animals (rodents), but think small, much smaller. Hope you enjoyed the podcast as much as I enjoyed picking apart the pellet!🤗
Heather, this obviously ain’t your first rodeo! Or should I say, owl pellet!🤗 Enjoy the podcast. I think you’ll get a kick out of it. It’s only 8 minutes listening time.
Check out the red circle on the owl pellet photo: any idea of what the heck it is? The answer is here: www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...
Have a fantastic safari, Chris! Looking forward to hearing your stories & seeing your stories that result!
A mature Bald Eagle perches in a hoar frost coated deciduous tree against a blue sky background.
Bald Eagles overwinter where there is open water - and when conditions are freezing and humid, it makes for some amazing scenes. Eagles and hoar frost play nicely together in juxtaposition and polarity. #birds
Yes, 2025 witnessed an abundance of bad Canadian environmental news, but there were some impressive good things that happened, too. (7 minute CBC radio segment) www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...
A coyote walks in the deep white snow.
When everything is covered in white, a Coyote's black nose and black tail tip really marks their startings and endings. #wildlife
They not only survive, but they appear to thrive in the coldest of a Canadian winter deep freeze. How do they do it? (8 min listening time)

Holy turtle!!!
Two Red Squirrels poke their heads our of a cavity in a tree trunk.
American Red Squirrels are fiesty, fiery, forest firecrackers that seem to be either chattering or chasing some one or some thing.
But every now and then, you get a glimpse of their softer side. Their calm demeanor never does seem to last for too long. #mammals.
While most songbirds have left the Rocky Mountains for the freezing times ahead - one special exception remains. The antics of American Dippers are so enjoyable, they make up for the lack of many other #birds.
