Data centres uses 32% of Ireland's total electricity supply but pay almost less than half of the residential rate. So we're effectively subsidizing tech giants during a cost of living & energy crisis. Meanwhile this Govt continues to cheerlead their expansion & continue to fail in their obligations.

The reason Irish rock helped ABBA win Eurovision ABBA winning Eurovision was a cultural touchstone never to be forgotten, but beneath the glittering surface, there was a hint of help from Irish rock icons.

A connection between ABBA and Thin Lizzy (the Philo, Eric Bell, and Brian Downey lineup)!

So Fantasy grows out of Romance (medieval) but rejects Romance (contemporary) because for girls, so Romance (contemporary) develops into something increasingly un-Fantastical, and has to be portmanteued back into Fantasy (Romantasy), despite Fantasy being originally Romance...

Hi all, my contract at LMU ends this month and I don't have any options lined up. I know that many of us are in the same situation, but if you hear of any opportunities or projects you think I might be suited to (doesn't have to be in academia) please send me a message or comment below. Thanks!

Good piece. While I am famous for my serenity, it can sometimes feel a little irritating to see male journalists and academics "discover" the manosphere, while very pointedly not referencing any of the research or writing, mostly by women, that goes back 10-15 years on this topic

Seven countries now generate 100% of their electricity from renewable sources, proving the transition is not theoretical but already operational. The barrier is no longer technology, but political will, investment priorities, and the courage to move faster.

I think one of my visceral reactions to the protesters is because they are bullies. Loud, boorish bullies. And I have no time for bullies. The irony is Trump caused the global crisis, and miniTrumps are causing the local one.

Mick Clifford: Does Ireland have a problem with right-wing extremism?
Ireland is not immune to racism or bigotry but the GPAHE report is inflating niche groups well above their true stature

Let's not forget classics like this, big part of the problem was the constant minimising of it

"You've overreacting, you're overreacting, you've overreacting, you're overreacting, you've overreacting, you're overreacting, you've overreacting, you're overreacting, OH SHIT WAIT YOU WERE ALL RIGHT!"

As a Jewish historian who works at a university, I think it’s great that an administration committed to destroying “the internal globalist enemy” which is staffed by groyper antisemites is collecting lists of Jews. Can’t see any potential downside here at all.

A billionaire can get what they want with one donation to a political party. The rest of us must fight for years to get even the most basic rights recognised. Money destroys democracy, more than any other cause. The first step towards a better world is to stop the rich buying political outcomes.

The arson in London of the ambulances run by a Jewish community organisation is morally repugnant. There's no contextualisation or qualification possible of this hate crime. Just call it what it is- antisemitic violence.

England Expected by Thomas Wright Personal experience and two generations can be a chasm that's hard to cross...

Chuffed 'Piker Press' has published ‘England Expected’, my coming-of-age story set in 80s England, dramatising family conflict between 3 generations - an ex-army, countryman grandfather; a Thatcherite, urbanite father; & a leftish, bookish, teen-narrator son.

I'm happy to have contributed an essay to @efacis.bsky.social Kaleidoscope project on Irish spirituality - honouring my RE teacher Miss Williams, who, like Miss Jean Brodie, led us out rather than shutting us in…

A reminder that when Christian Zionists and Christian Nationalists in the West talk about Christians, they are not talking about the Christians of the same holy land that Jesus himself came from. They don't give a shit about us.

It is absolutely disgraceful how little far thought was put into ensuring everyone due compensation because of institutional abuse was able to access it without detriment to them. Compensation for incalculable harm by the state should not be treated like a windfall or wage, in Ire or the UK.
