(To be clear, the advantage the MCs have is smarts and the ability to figure out workarounds that would not occur to people who are firmly ensconced in the culture.)

They're very immigrant/third culture kid coded.

Also the side quests are great.

Upon nth re-read of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, I think I figured out what makes many of Ilona Andrews' protagonists appealing to me: so many of them are not a part of the culture they have to survive in, but often that gives them an advantage. (Obligatory "In this essay I will...")
