USDA reorganization will cut agricultural and forest research One of the agency’s largest and most storied research facilities will be closed along with most forest research stations

The USDA has decided to scatter one of ag research’s crown jewels. What was once a hub where entomologists and plant virologists worked side by side is being left to rot. I was lucky to be part of it for nearly a decade. A hundred years of history gone in a flash.

Everyone concerned about data loss right now should learn about the End of Term Web Archive, which I believe has been working on preserving federal websites for the past 8 months. The dataset you fear has been lost may well be here

Just an incredible project. Thank you to everyone involved

Opinion | A new era of government censorship has dawned Donald Trump fancies himself a champion of free speech. Oh, really?

A new era of government censorship has begun.
It started with the silencing of scientific speech, when the admin blocked release of research on bird flu. But MAGA has also cracked down on other wrongthink—on race, geography (!), and of course Trump himself

8 ceramic tea light holders on a shelf surrounded by other pieces of pottery. 4 are white. 2 are green. One is blue and one is brown.

From ERS Charts of Note: As income increases, the share of income spent on food falls.

(I think about this chart a lot.)

Sometimes I tweet about my work, most times retweet my amazing coworkers and friends, and occasionally I make pottery. The last thing is unrelated to the first two.

Last month, my first lead author journal article, about conflict and dietary diversity, & part of my dissertation was released after 6 years in the making. Very excited to see it out in the world, and grateful to my coauthor and committee for helping me.

I’m so proud of my students! This is the first time I’ve helped students with such a big research project and they did so well and they enjoyed it. Looking forward to many more years of this.
