A drainage ditch runs central through two rice paddy fields, overlain by a blue sky. A guava tree grows defiantly in the center of the ditch. Just beyond, two colleagues measure greenhouse gas fluxes from the young rice growing in the left field.

Measuring terrestrial and ditch GHG fluxes from peatland sites in Telacogon today. Started off drizzly, but quickly improved

Feeling very privileged to be doing fieldwork in Mindanao, Philippines- again! One of the most beautiful locations in the world in my opinion. We are measuring GHG flutes and concentrations from soils and drainage canals in peatlands under various management regimes.

Gaps in the global network of precipitation monitoring stations are hindering efforts to assess climate change impacts on freshwater resources and to predict future pressures such as droughts and floods, according to new study in Nature.

A surprisingly wintry day on the Migneint blanket bog. Three rewetted/restored sites visited for GHG flux measurements with @laurabaugh94.bsky.social and @peatblogger.bsky.social.

Brits talk about 'pushing up the daisies' when we end our days but did you know that in Polish, it's 'smelling the flowers from underneath'!
This #FreeWillsMonth, we encourage you to consider what you can leave to loved ones, including a future for our wildflowers in the years ahead.

1/2 On the 23-24/02, YPP will be hosting a Sphagnum planting day at Castle Bolton. We are looking for local volunteers who might be interested in joining for the day - no previous experience required, just an enthusiasm to play a hands-on role in peatland restoration and climate action!

A cold day on a rewetted Welsh blanket bog with @laurabaugh94.bsky.social and @peatblogger.bsky.social, but great to get our GHG sampling underway for our @water4all-eu.bsky.social project ECO-WADE.

Lovely Friday news; our EPSRC Impact Accelerator Account proposal has been successfully funded.

Titled "Ditching Methane to Engineer Net Zero" (yes, it's about ditches), and with @laurabaugh94.bsky.social and @peatblogger.bsky.social also on board. Looking forward to more ditch GHG work in 2026.

Response and recovery of a Sphagnum peatland from long-term human-induced alkalinisation Abstract. Northern peatlands are significant terrestrial carbon stores but are increasingly threatened by human activities. Ombrotrophic peatlands, being naturally acidic, are particularly vulnerable…

This is a longshot... but does anyone know where I can get 10-12 kDa mwco dialysis tubing (preferably one that doesn't come in like 100 feet rolls and cost hundreds of great British pounds?)

A rather damp day sampling Hatch Mere with @peatblogger.bsky.social for the @gleonetwork.bsky.social GasLit project. Five sites sampled (4 x littoral, 1 x pelagic) for greenhouse gases and temp/O2 profiles.

Is academia a great path? Probably not. Can I say that you should choose government or the NGO sector or even tech for a more stable lifestyle? No! Do I have the slightest idea what to advise you to do with your life? No, no I do not.

Beaver releases into wild to be allowed in England for first time in centuries Exclusive: Government to grant nature groups a licence for release of rodent species after earlier setbacks

Another reason to celebrate today. FANTASTIC news for biodiversity in England. Important to recognise when Labour, Defra & @naturalengland.bsky.social do something really hugely positive for nature, both symbolically and in practice. Well done them. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
