Human Activity Drives Unprecedented 20th-Century Fires in Tropical Peatlands A recent study led by researchers from the University of Exeter reveals that wildfires in tropical peatlands have surged to levels not seen in at least 2,000 years. By analyzing charcoal preserved in peat from regions across Central and South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australasia, scientists reconstructed historical wildfire patterns and found that fires had actually been declining for more than a millennium, mainly influenced by natural climate factors such as drought.
