We've been busy over the past weeks setting up #WETSCAPES2.0 research sites in already wet or to be rewetted #peatlands. Big thanks to our newest team members, the two "greenhorns" BetramM and RamMona 😉, who really pulled their weight helping us to build fence posts! @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social

Water brings #peatlands to life. Water is needed for peat soils to form and build up over time, and to sustain the resulting carbon-rich ecosystems.

These large peaty water stores are important for water security and climate resilience, but they are undervalued.

A new Marches Peat Partnership is bringing people together to restore and protect peatlands across our region 🌱

Healthy peat means better water, more wildlife, less flooding, and stored carbon.

Collaboration is key—and this is a big step for nature’s recovery.

‘The start of the healing process’: the vital work to restore Britain’s peatlands A project on Dartmoor to reprofile the landscape aims to return the springy bog – and carbon store – to its natural condition

“Unless this restoration work is done, this blanket bog on top of the hill here will really struggle to form and we will not see it past 2060. What we are trying to do is make the peatland as resilient as we can now, so it can face what is coming.” #peatlands

After some heavy lifting we've started to install wool rolls from Sustainable Rope 🐏 These are 100% wool rolls which we are trialling to see how they work compared with the coir rolls we've used so far🤔

We hope they work well, as it would be great to use local wool to help restore our #peatlands 😀

Human Activity Drives Unprecedented 20th-Century Fires in Tropical Peatlands A recent study led by researchers from the University of Exeter reveals that wildfires in tropical peatlands have surged to levels not seen in at least 2,000 years. By analyzing charcoal preserved in peat from regions across Central and South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australasia, scientists reconstructed historical wildfire patterns and found that fires had actually been declining for more than a millennium, mainly influenced by natural climate factors such as drought. This long-term decline was abruptly reversed in the 20th century, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of Australasia, where human activities—including draining peatlands for agriculture, clearing forests, and urban development—have dramatically increased the risk of ignition. In contrast, more remote peatlands in South America and Africa did not show the same increase, though experts warn that these areas could face rising risks as human expansion continues. Peatlands store more carbon than all the world's forests combined, so fires release massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, exacerbating climate change. The researchers stress the urgent need for large-scale conservation, sustainable land management, and ecosystem restoration to protect these critical carbon-rich ecosystems and limit global carbon emissions.
