This week, we were excited to present our research to social scientists in #Estonia, led by Roosa Rytkönen at Tallinn University. It was a great opportunity to share knowledge amidst intense expert and public disputes on the large-scale #rewetting of Estonia's forested #peatlands. @leverhulme.ac.uk

Promotional graphic titled “Wetlands in action – Session 3.” The poster announces an online webinar, “Data-Driven Wetland Monitoring: GHG Hotspot and Rewetting Impact Assessment,” scheduled for January 13th, 2026, from 11:00 to 12:00 CET. The speakers listed are Alexandra Barthelmens, Werner Wiedemann, and Jonas Franke. The design features a light blue background with stylized wetland illustrations, logos of partner organizations along the bottom, and a note indicating funding by the European Union.

One of the criteria for the project’s success should be a change in the levels of #groundwater within the former drainage systems. As a result of the areas' #rewetting, it is expected that levels will grow, and the seasonal amplitude of their fluctuations will decrease.

Two pairs of feet with sneakers and rubber boots standing on grassland.
A green frog with brown markings sitting between grasses.
What a huge scale! Last week we walked >16 km across a drained peat grassland to select study plots at our #wetscapes2.0 landscape-level experiment on peatland #rewetting. Soon sneakers won't be a suitable any more, and frogs don't have to rely on drainage ditches to thrive!
Where there is water, there is Sphagnum. #Rewetting is essential to make our peatlands greener and more resistant to droughts #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog
We've long supported active #restoration of #peatlands post-extraction, using enhanced #rewetting and #moss transfer
