Through innovative paludiculture trials, we’re exploring climate-smart crops that thrive on peat soils with raised water tables — keeping carbon stored while creating new farmer income opportunities.

We suggested #Paludiculture here in the ##HumberheadLevels but the #solar #farm developers wouldn't listen or even consider. Shame, particularly as it's in Ed Miliband's back yard! Best of both worlds, nah .... why bother .... #Doncaster #Yorkshire

Cowberry or lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), seen here fruiting at one of the project’s Paludiculture farms, is a small creeping plant of the heath family (Ericaceae), related to the blueberry and cranberry, is a promising Paludiculture crop.

Jonathon is proud of his potatoes; and rightly so, they are delicious but it is not an economical farm business opportunity. He gets around £100 profit from the supermarket chain for each crate of spuds. This is turned into around £5k profit by the chip chop.
Harper Adams University students investigating what is the problem with peat? These soils when exposed or tilled, dry and degraded emit a significant proportion of #GHG’s from #agriculture. Continued production from these soils is not possible due to the UK Government’s commitment to #carbon #NetZero 🙅 by 2030.
Travelling on peat is interesting! It is either bumpy or, when wet, not possible…continued land-use requires continuous water resource management.
What are the business options for Jonathon’s farm? Continued production on rehydrated #peat - #paludiculture or #naturalcapital - or #renewable energy.

Soils hold a hidden seed bank that helps ecosystems bounce back from stress. When drained peatlands are rewetted + restored through paludiculture, dormant wetland plants can return. On our project sites, Marsh Pennywort + Ragged Robin are reappearing! #seedbanks #environment #paludiculture
The figure shows an advertisement for the EGU 2026, which is taking place from 3rd to 8th May 2026. Abstract submission is open until Thursday, 15th January 1 pm CET. Deadline for support application is open until Monday, 1st December 1 pm CET. Below this information, four fotos of peatlands are displayed. On the top left, rannoch-rush is shown to grow among red peat mosses. On the top rigth, there is a blocked ditch in a grassland. On the bottom left, a paludiculture site with reed and cattail is shown. On the bottom right, there is a picture of a restored peatland with cotton gras and pools of open water.
#EGU has become a great event for peatlanders. If you work on #paludiculture, restoration or managed peatlands, our session at #EGU26 might be the one for you:

☘️As a part of #RRR2025 an excursion, led by @succow-stiftung.de with policy makers to #paludiculture sites took place!
🙋♀️ 🙋♂️ @juttapaulus.bsky.social, Garreth Kratz and Jörn Mothes joint the event!
‼️ The transition to paludiculture is a long-term undertaking and requires innovation and exnovation!
A glimpse of the future? At @peatfree.bsky.social we often talk of #paludiculture as a way to keep #peat in the ground while providing income for farmers on peaty soils. Now they've grown rice on rewetted peat in Cambridgeshire www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... #endpeatsales 🌱 #gardening #climatechange
It was great to be part of this international #paludiculture community for the last few days presenting our work from the Patchy Peat Solutions Project.
