Elusive Nightjar Populations Doubled in 5 Years, a ‘Remarkable Comeback’ Conservationists Say The population of one of England’s most-elusive birds is flourishing again thanks to conservation efforts in the south of the country. The nightjar, sometimes called the nighthawk, becomes active at twilight, and they’re famous for their chortling calls and fantastic camouflage. Their numbers declined some 51% between the 1970s and 2000s after substantial forest loss. At the top, the slogan reads “REAL HOPE. REAL CHANGE.” In the centre, bold text says “PROTECT OUR PRECIOUS WAXCAP GRASSLANDS.”

Below, a quote reads: “Waxcap grasslands are among our most precious and overlooked habitats. What steps are the Government taking to protect them, and what progress has been made towards recognising waxcap grasslands as a habitat of principal importance?”

The quote is attributed as a written parliamentary question from Natalie Bennett, Green Party peer, with her portrait shown. The Green Party logo appears at the bottom alongside imprint text.

Waxcap grasslands are rare, beautiful, and ecologically vital habitats – yet they lack the protection they deserve.

The Government must recognise their importance and act to safeguard them.
