No advice but i know those feels
I definitely think there are some situations when retrieval practice is helpful and even necessary, but I I think that by itself, it cannot lead to connected, usable knowledge. I think something else is needed in addition.
This is what annoys me about retrieval practice--it only focuses on disconnected facts. OTOH, the basic science on how to teach/learn schemas and integrated knowledge is in very early stages. I am hoping to address this gap with some of my (planned, future) research.
100% agree. I think the use of "parallel" and "serial" in not super helpful but I think what the writer (Carl H) is trying to point out is the distinction between disconnected facts and knowledge that is integrated into a larger structure, such as a schema.
Thanks. I see another poster had a similar question...I may have to look at the other article you linked. I am not familiar with this distinction (cognitivism vs. enactivism).
Very interesting article. Thanks for sharing. Definitely some problems. First question: What do you mean by "cognitivism"?

This looks like so much more fun than what I am supposed to be doing right now (applying for jobs). *sigh*
Early math struggles don’t have to last a lifetime. Western’s Daniel Ansari developed the free Numeracy Screener to support early intervention, helping children build confidence with numbers and stronger futures.

Thanks for this entry into cross-cultural sandwich dynamics. This will displace my previous most interesting fact on this topic, which was the use of tubed meat substances in Scandinavian sandwiches (encountered in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and honestly possibly my fav part. book was weird).
Fascinating! I am personally very interested in the development of relational concepts and children's (and adults') abilities to consider counterfactual propositions. Thanks for sharing this!
If you liked that paper, you may find this one interesting: link.springer.com/article/10.1... . We found evidence of interaction--not just competition--between procedural and declarative learning. DM me if you need help finding the full text!
Attended an excellent training by Research Project Management today (researchpm.com). Highly recommend RPM's tools and trainings to researchers at any career stage. The clarity and organization these tools will provide can add years to your life.

Not sure why #TheArchers is trending, but just seeing that hashtag has earwormed me with the theme music. Even though I haven't heard it in probably a decade. Truly, music and memory have a special relationship.

Was searching for one of my co-authors and this post came up! I was excited to be part of writing this review and think it will be helpful to others in the field, so re-posting it now.

New resource! To truly meet standards-aligned goals, educators must internalize lessons before teaching. This resource breaks down the steps a teacher must take to prepare prior to teaching a lesson, with an elementary ELA example. #HQIM #LessonInternalization

Congratulations! You don't know me but I saw you give a talk at Berkeley in the early 2000s. Since then I keep showing people this image from your paper because it's such a great way to show how graded and discrete representations can come out of the same underlying system.
