Sinfest was a seemingly normal webcomic back in the 90s about a horny guy who sometimes talks to god or the devil, but the creator slowly became a combo of qanon conspiracy theorist, puritan christian and radical feminist who thinks trump will liberate women from their lgbt oppressors.
Stonetoss is a proud neonazi whose comics you might have seen remixed as memes. This milder one broke containment with a lot of edits but others are like mocking the holocaust and stuff

I gotta be honest I have never ever encountered this in anyone who is not proudly openly far-right. Like what's an example? I'm in my 40s and people's opinion on nazis has been as black & white all my life as it ought to be???
It’s kind of sickening and inhuman that advertising exists at all. Every space occupied in your life by marketing should clawed back by vandalism, violence and fire if necessary, it needs to be purged.
I hate to say it but part of yokai watch's failure in the west may have been that the ridiculous ones like I love weren't balanced out by enough "cool" ones like this guy, and there was little to no presence of the more serious yokai in the marketing. You do need both!

Weird as hell tumblr comment as if I've ever in my life called out another artist for their content. I dont think I've ever done that once even. And only make fun of anyone at all if they're as unapologetically terrible as Stonetoss or the Sinfest guy

You really will find that this is pretty mainstream. If a fanfic author is good at storytelling I URGE them to consider leveling all the way up by developing brand new characters personal to their imagination and sensibilities. Most new characters are pastiches or homages to others anyhow :)
I know there are amazing fanfics out there, but personally I crave seeing originality above all else, and the original creator of a character, to me, is always the true word on that character...like, good or not, I'll never be as interested in new dragonball stories with toriyama gone 🤷♂️
This isn't odd of me, either, most people I know are neutral to disinterested in fanfiction for those reasons. Fanfic authors however seem to have a really insular culture in which they assume fanfic is an almost universal, rather than niche aspect of fandom...it is very very niche, actually!
Yeah, but if the story is good, I already know I'd prefer it have brand new characters the author invented. That's just what matters more to me personally, so much so that I'd even rather read a terrible story with an original setting than a good one using someone else's setting
This isn't excusing bad reporting, though, obviously when reporting anything to do with the internet they should know the difference between visits and visitors, but they also did not just catch some big main central hub of that shit. They caught one little finger of a widespread culture.
"It was 62 million visits, not individual people" is true, but that website was also just one iceberg tip of the "manosphere" that's been festering since before gamergate. Worldwide there's probably a lot more than 62 million people logging into equivalents and worse.

Tbh most creators I know also just aren't that interested in fanfic. Even as a fan of anything I've never really read one, they aren't everyone's thing
