After collecting examples since 2006 (!) today I decided to finally create the Museum of Dead Digital Museum Displays:

Pathetic fallacy?
Digital doom?
The pained wails of curators everywhere?
Yep.

‘Jackdaw Ash’ - my new wood engraving inspired by a trip to Long Meg - is now available on my print shop - and etsy. On offer at willowhouseprints.uk/shop for the rest of the week too.

Congratulations John, I missed this post, but saw the news elsewhere when it was announced - utterly deserved

photo of a labelled envelope with a number of identical black and white ‘ex libris’ bookplates featuring a wading bird design
Just dispatched a number of these bespoke bookplates to a friend, carved into engravers’ plastic and hand printed. This was my first bookplate / ex libris, hopefully the first of many

Great to be working in wood again - this wood engraving in progress shows one of the big, old (Ash?) trees found at the centre of Long Meg and her Daughters stone circle in Cumbria #woodengraving #reliefprint #stonecircles
I had a great time at Sudley House Handmade last Saturday - sharing the wonderful library with some very talented makers. Made some megalithic sales, big and small, and very happy with my stall looking the best it has ever been. Always room for improvement of course 😁

Photo of multiple black ink prints on white and tinted papers hanging from a drying rack. The prints depict megaliths in landscapes under dramatic skies, and have phrases beneath them. One reads ‘The Cove.’, the other ‘Count the stones as ‘round you walk / listen to Meg and she will talk’.

From the article: Fig. 2. Various steps and raw materials in the production of the bone needles. Photos by Martin Lominy. The photos show bone needles and the stone tools used to create the needles.
Today I'm writing about virtual reconstruction and archaeological evidence of adornment, specifically tattoos. There's a great paper by Christian Gates St-Pierre to created a replica bone needle assemblage, tattooed some pig skin, and compared the microwear to artefacts.

looking good!
Pulling the first print in the edition for my new ‘Listen to Meg’ linocut.
Here printed on handmade Khadi paper - given how translucent it is, I think I’ll back the 16X23” print area with a lighter paper to lift the clouds and soften some of the differences in ink thickness. Happy with it though
That is a lovely photo

This block has been completed since last year but am only now getting to an edition. Printing it today on some gorgeous Fabriano Roserpina, great surface texture but takes some work to print.

Poorly lit photo of a standing stone, the sea is visible beyond it. A 2m photo scale and string have been laid out in front of the stone in this pre-excavation pic. With colleagues and friends Ian Cartwright and Simon Pressey, we three moved a lot of soil in the week that followed!
An excavation trench on front of a standing stone, revealing two other recumbent stones and some fairly straight section edges.
A stone Bronze Age armguard. This picture shows a small stone rectangle with a single countersunk hole drilled at either end. It is in a museum case (the Society Serquaise museum on Sark). From atop a deliberately laid stone surface between the recumbent stones, expertly recovered by my friend and colleague Simon Pressey
A standing stone with the trench backfilled, a 7 years on. A bare patch where grass never repopulates due to cattle using the stone as a 'rub'

In 2017, Barry Cunliffe directed me to investigate this standing stone thought to be the last of a stone circle on Little Sark. We found two of its mates repurposed as sides of a burial chamber. Rabbits and rhisomes had destroyed much, but a Bronze Age 'archer' had lain here.
Sun setting & a stormy sky over the fallen limestone slabs of the Neolithic henge
I'm chuffed it's #StandingStoneSunday 🍻
An all time favourite site is Arbor Low Neolithic henge, sitting quietly in the Derbyshire countryside. Almost as significant as Stonehenge, but you have it to yourself 👌
50 fallen limestone megaliths once stood upright. An incredible place

Photo of a small scraperboard artwork showing a very tall, tapering standing stone among established trees and shrubs. A fence, gate and short grass appear in the foreground with a smaller stone in front, bearing a circular mark. Light streams in through the trees behind. The image is executed in white lines on black
For #StandingStoneSunday a small sketch of a big stone - one of the Devil’s Arrows. I’ve been meaning to try a linocut or engraving of one of these for a long time, so this brings me a little closer to that.

Poster for The Vourdalak, where an 18th century courtier is about to be devoured by a skeletal looking creature.
A folkloric vampire film where the monster is a life-size puppet with a silky voice and where the true horror is patriarchy. I thoroughly recommend THE VOURDALAK.

Photo of a hand over a wooden surface holding a sharp tool with a red handle and a small card with a black abs white design upon it. The design shows a landscape with trees and hills, a brooding sky and a path stretching off into the distance to a small structure. A lone figure in a large coat and top hat strides towards it
Another scraperboard exercise, this time inspired by wood engraver Agnes Miller Parker
