Monet's water lily garden in Giverny is an ever-changing and ever-renewing source of inspiration for me. In this painting, I wanted to capture the feeling of water lilies floating on the surface of a still pond, filled with reflections of the clouds. I applied thick brushstrokes of oil paint laid side by side without layering to capture the sense of movement and texture in the scene.

Tell Beacon Hill to Take Action against Book Banning The American Library Association reported that Massachusetts had the 4th highest number of book ban attacks in 2022. Complicating the data, and problematic in its own way, many book ban attacks are...

Massachusetts is #1 in USA for Education. Don't ruin it by banning books, especially because of stupid people who want to take away our freedom of knowledge and understanding how others think, write, and live. actionnetwork.org/letters/ma-h...

Thank you! No, I’ve only ever visited South America once and that was a trip to Buenos Aires before I had gotten into landscape photography. I’d love to go back.

Excited to share some good news for Illinois families — we’ve reached over 100,000 children in our state receiving books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Let’s keep reading.

How human evolution has been speeding up Providing some of the missing background for new research on natural selection from ancient DNA

In this piece I go into a 20-year history of looking at selection on human genes. It's a foundation for the recent work on ancient DNA showing fast evolutionary change. That's been a well-supported conclusion from anthropology for a very long time.

Sea stacks on a sandy beach at low tide, topped with wind-shaped trees and surrounded by cliffs under a cloudy sky.

HERACLITOS. ASÀROTOS ÒIKOS MOSAIC, DETAIL, C. 125 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

This famous mosaic is signed by one Heraclitos, who may have copied the "unswept floor" mosaic by Sosos of Pergamon in the C2 CE, but as a border to a large and mainly vanished central scene with Egyptian and Nilotic details. Mosaic representations of pharaonic statues were set at the corners, and along the edge are lively riverside scenes like this duck which is peering into a curved lilypad leaf to see if a delicious frog or insect is hiding there. The duck's form is beautifully modelled in light and shadow, and the border of the mosaic at bottom is a wonderful undulating wave.

The splendid Asàrotos òikos #mosaic at the #VaticanMuseums is a #Hadrianic copy of a mosaic described by #Pliny the Elder at #Pergamon. Here, instead of looking at the famous "unswept floor" border, for #MosaicMonday we're looking at part of the #Nilotic mosaic it surrounded. #AncientBluesky 🏺

The world is [waving hands around in despair] but some things make me incredibly happy. The woodland box turtle (indeed, all turtles) is one of those things. Seeing one in the wild brings me a moment of joy. Beautiful animals
