You’re absolutely right, while the Nordic Passport Union was signed in 1954, 2001 marked an important step in integrating these countries into the broader Schengen framework, further strengthening free movement and cooperation across Europe.
25 years ago today, the borders of 5 countries were abolished.
On 25 March 2001, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway & Iceland effectively became part of the Schengen Area. What started in 1985 as a group of 5 countries, now includes 29 without internal frontiers.
