Yesterday I took a KANOPUS-V 3 X-band pass where I recognised an area from FENGYUN 3B images I received years ago. Navodari on the Black Sea coast. Local crop, somewhat bigger area (both PSS), a MSS false colour crop and a FENGYUN 3H crop of the area an hour or so later.

Weather satellite image of South West France, visually providing evidence of extensive flooding.

A crop from the FengYun 3F X-band pass @ 11:03 UTC - vast flooding in S-W France also evident from large sediment outflows into the Sea/Ocean.

IMHO - the whole cooling argument presented is BS - cooling stuff in space is veeeeeeery tough

A true legacy - I had the honour to work as XMM project scientist under his directorship and later worked on one of his cherished missions guiding Rosetta towards the comet 67P - XMM first light press conference - Bonnet, Hasinger (later director of science), myself, Bleeker - RIP Roger …

Zoals Drs P zou zeggen: Leiden is een mooie stad maar net iets te ver weg

This camera was never intended for this purpose. Only years into the mission I gave permission (as mission manager) to try and use this as ‘the Mars webcam’ for PR purposes.

I was there as project scientist. A true piece of history from my e-mail archive. The first in-orbit report:

Rosetta’s lander Philae is safely on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, as these first two CIVA images confirm. One of the lander’s three feet can be seen in the foreground. The image is a two-image mosaic (pic: ESA/Rosetta/Philae/CIVA)

#OTD: 12 November 2014, @esa.int's Rosetta Philae lander made history by touching down on the surface of a comet, the first spacecraft ever to do so. The landing was confirmed at 16:03 GMT/17:03 CET 🧪🔭

You don’t need to know a lot of Spanish to see this article, with inputs from my ESA Rosetta colleague Michael Kueppers, is going the right way !

Spent today X-band tracking "Le quattro stagioni" of FengYun weather satellites: 3D, 3E, 3F and 3H (and 3G) - data processing is a lot of work, so images later. First this solar FY3E XEUVI image with some nice solar flares and plasma arcs (and a cosmic ray hitting the detector)

Mars Express is a tough little animal with a wonderful team behind it keeping it alive :-) And they keep doing new things as well, like the mutual radio science measurements with ExoMars through the atmosphere.

Lots of condensation trails can be seen on this Netherlands crop from a FY3F pass @ 10:55 UTC - but if these semi circles near the middle are condensation trails, what was that pilot doing ??

What amazes me most is this frequency “wobbling” you see (skewed bright lines in the waterfall). Here the recently launched METOP-SGA1 - I mostly see this on W passes.

I was at the ISAS lodge in Sagamihara Feb 1990 but arrived at 2am (Alaska volcano necessitated a Vancouver detour) but the guard wouldn’t let me in. With great difficulty I convinced him to call prof Tanaka (who spoke fluent Dutch) and finally got me in after having been awake for some 30 hours…

From a FY3F pass @ 09:46 UTC today, a Colour Infra Red (CIR) crop centered on Greece. A vast amount of bush fires can be seen, including what looks like a big one on the Island of Chios.
