A large photographic backdrop shows a sunny coastal scene with a castle on a hill, a harbor, and a walkway. In front of it, two wooden deck chairs feature printed portraits of women on their fabric seats. The floor has a bold black‑and‑white geometric tile pattern, and stained‑glass windows and wood paneling frame the space. Potted plants soften the setup, creating a staged, summery exhibition atmosphere.

Two small photographs mounted one above the other on a white panel between wooden trim. Top image: a person stands beside a large white vending machine labeled ICE against a beige brick wall with orange trim; bright sunlight casts the person’s long shadow on the wall. Bottom image: a clear blue sky with a tall metal signpost holding a “SELF SERV” sign with a left arrow and a stylized cup symbol. Strong color contrasts and clean geometric lines evoke roadside Americana.

A wide interior view of an ornate gallery room with patterned tile floors, carved wooden paneling, and stained‑glass windows. Four large framed photographs hang on the walls, each showing sunlit roadside scenes: a person in a vehicle, a tall sign against blue sky, someone standing by a building, and a motel sign. Photograph mounted on a wooden wall showing a travel moment inside a vehicle. A forearm in a bright orange sleeve rests on the open window frame; the side mirror reflects the driver’s face wearing sunglasses. Outside, a clear blue sky stretches above utility poles and a roadside sign with the partial word “PARK.” Warm daylight highlights textures of fabric and glass, conveying a relaxed, on-the-road mood and a sense of movement and perspective.

Framed photograph hanging above a wooden cabinet. It shows a person outdoors holding a can aloft, head tilted back as droplets rise into the air. Behind them stands a tall, weathered vintage sign shaped like a vertical arrow topped with a star, reading “STARDUST” and “MARFA” in faded letters. The sky glows in soft blue‑pink light, giving the scene a dreamy, nostalgic, roadside‑Americana feel.

Printed photograph mounted on a white board, displayed indoors against a wooden paneled wall. The photo shows two people on a boat: in the foreground a light‑haired person reclines on a white seat wearing a bright orange knit top; in the background a shirtless, muscular person stands near the railing. Beyond them a calm blue sea meets a clear sky. Soft sunlight highlights skin and fabric; the glossy print and white mount convey a curated, summery, leisurely scene.

Front cover of the book "Mapmatics: How We Navigate the World through Numbers" by Paulina Rowińska.

How does a delivery driver distribute hundreds of packages in a single working day? Why does remote Alaska have such a large airport? Where should we look for elusive serial killers? The answers lie in the crucial connection between maps and maths.

In Mapmatics, Dr Paulina Rowińska embarks on a fascinating journey to discover the mathematical foundations of cartography and cartographical influences on mathematics. From a sixteenth-century map that remains an indispensable navigation tool despite emphasizing the North–South divide, and maps of voting districts that can empower or silence whole communities, to public transport maps that both guide and mislead passengers, she reveals how maps and maths shape not only our sense of space and time but also our worldview.

Through entertaining stories, surprising real-world examples and a cast of unforgettable characters, Mapmatics helps us to appreciate the mathematical methods and ideas behind maps. And, by illuminating how our world works, leaves us better equipped to understand and look after it.

A bold geometric illustration in red, navy, and beige fills the frame. Angular shapes form stylised buildings, a tree, and a circular dish-like element. The composition feels modern and graphic, with flat colours and sharp lines. The names “Legeai” and “Gaspard skate shop” appear within the design, integrated into the abstract cityscape.

Two close-up shots of vintage-style cars sit on the left: the top shows the curved rear window and red bodywork; the bottom shows a cream car’s rounded tail light and smooth panel lines. On the right, a traffic light glows red against a tall modern building fading into mist, creating a quiet, urban atmosphere tied together by red accents.

"The brain's many maps"

If you're a brain, it can be tough to stay organized. The world comes at you fast, from all angles, in different sensory formats- sights, sounds, smells.
You need to take it all in, but you also need to parse it, process it, categorize it, remember and learn from it. And of course you also need react to it, preferably appropriately.

So what do you do-as a brain-to handle this organizational overload?
Well, for one thing, you make maps.

Lots of maps.

A side‑by‑side comparison of two sections of schematic transit maps labeled “Planned” and “Effective.”

Both show BRT Line D running north–south through Brest with French and Breton station names. The left map shows the originally planned yellow route; the right shows the actual green route with several renamed stops.

Other tram and bus lines intersect at central stations like Hôtel de Ville and Liberté.

Homemade schematic map of Kayseri’s tram network showing four color‑coded lines: T1 in red, T2 in blue, T3 in teal, and T4 in green.
Station names run along each route, with major transfers at Cumhuriyet Meydanı, which links all lines. Icons mark the train station and bus terminal.

Here is a little side project I recently put together to shed some light on the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) network in Campinas, Brazil.

Like many other cities across South America, Campinas eventually caught on to the utterly viral BRT frenzy! Other modes of transportation (such as trolleybuses and light rail) had been proposed earlier to ease road congestion and improve mobility across a metropolitan area home to more than 3.5 million inhabitants, but the idea of implementing a BRT system ultimately won out in 2011.

However, it took a little over a decade before the BRT network began to be gradually brought into service, starting with the launch of BRT20 on Corredor Campo Grande in 2022.
Corredor Ouro Verde followed in 2023 with the opening of BRT10.
Corredor Perimetral opened last in 2024, completing the originally planned network.

As shown on the map, the system consists of seven lines, distributed across three major corridors totaling almost 37km: Campo Grande, Ouro Verde and Perimetral.
When heading towards the city center, some lines extend beyond their dedicated eastern terminal (Mercado or Central) to run along what is locally known as Corredor Central - a ring-like collection of five one-way avenues looping through the city center, where regular traffic and urban transit are physically segregated.
After completing their loop - serving both Terminal Mercado and Terminal Central along the way - these lines rejoin their respective corridors to continue their outbound journey.

Lines operating on the Ouro Verde and Perimetral corridors stop at all stations up to one of three main terminals - BRT12 to Santa Lúcia, BRT10 to Ouro Verde and BRT11 to Vila Nova.
Lines running along Corredor Campo Grande also serve either of two major terminals: Satélite Íris and Campo Grande. Additionally, they are further divided into all-stops ("parador") for BRT20 and BRT25 or semi-express ("semi-espresso") services for BRT21 and BRT26.

Episode 163 | An Ace Up Your Sliabh:
Recurring Styles in Placenames Pt. 3

Could the word slibhin - a sly, sneaky so-and-so - possibly come from the word sliabh, meaning a mountain? Are mountain folk really that cunning, or do the people from counties with many a sliabh (counties where more Irish was historically spoken just happen to have more fire in the belly When they move to the lowlands in search of work?
In the third of our series on the recurring Irish words in placenames, Darach and Peadar discuss sliabh and cnoc (mountain and hill). What's the difference between a mountain and a hill? We'll tell you. Is Sliabh Ailp so named because it looks like it belongs in the Alps? If McGillycuddy reeks, why doesn't he take a shower? Why does the Irish for Sugarloaf not have the word siúcra in it? And what's the deal with Ben Bulben?
All will be answered!

Episode 162 | Inis or Oileán?
Recurring Styles in Placenames Pt. 2

When is an island an Inis and when is it an Oileán?
In the second of our look at recurring words in Irish placenames, Darach, Gearóidin and Peadar consider islands. Why do some inland locations have island-based names?
Why are there three places in Ireland called Lady's Island, each with a different name in Irish?
What about the island that Charles J Haughey bought in the Gaeltacht - does anyone know how that got its name?
For some reason, University Challenge enters the discussion.
