apparently Elon's gotten so mad about Grok not answering questions about Afrikaners the way he wants, xAI's now somehow managed to put it into some kind of hyper-Afriforum mode where it thinks every question is about farm murders or the song "Kill the Boer"

oh they did something recently?

no i just always hated unity. its a travesty, other aspiring game devs have backed me up on this, and i have no idea how people put up with this software. geniunely the most 2/10 shit i've ever used.

Only times I ever hear trump's voice is when he says something incredibly stupid so just hearing his voice makes me giggle and laugh nowadays, as if he's a joke himself, which he kinda is I suppose

Excitedly waiting for the TDC17 drum from Rhythmagica!!
I've tried taiko arcade a little in Malaysia and Taiwan, it was really fun.

Unfortunately almost all taiko simulators are terrible so I'll have to play on rhythm festival (pretty) and osu (custom songs).

from land to llm training data, it's a similar story

I haven't used egui much but I don't believe it solves any non-trivial layouts.

I should use it for some debug UI though, thanks for the reminder :3

it's actually day 3 lol

For example, aspect_ratio doesn't affect the layout, so it will just render beyond its borders to match the aspect ratio.

On the other I have the opposite issue with certain flex hierarchies, where the children force-grow the parent despite having Overflow::scroll_y and even 100% max-sizes.

Day 2 of using #bevy, making a song select menu.

Bevy UI is not *bad* but it's not great either, but all engines have kinda bad UI systems. I suspect there's a lot of bugs from Taffy, not bevy, but there are some broken layout properties.

So far I've only run into one **major** problem, rust-analyzer doesn't work half the time for some reason. So I'm doing this entirely type-blind :P

And a minor quirk which is that texture atlas layouts need to be stored as an asset to use with sprites, which is a bit inconvenient but not a big deal

So far I'm very impressed with the engine. I'm no doubt gonna hit some limitations soon though.

I'll post an update once I implement more functionality, to see how messy it will become with more complexity :)

It's pretty darn ergonomic so far, especially for Rust.

These are two systems I use to handle hit results/judgements. It feels a bit like writing a message-passing (channel) architecture except you don't have to wire up receivers and transmitters manually.

Compiling Bevy using NixOS Welcome to my website!

Quick and dirty blog post that probably didn't need writing in the end. nobbele.dev/blog/2025-01...

All the existing posts (incl. Bevy docs) reference a "udev" package that doesn't seem to exist anymore, referencing "systemd" instead worked for me but I'm not that's the correct package to use.

Nix - Death by a thousand cuts thoughts, talks, docs and unpopular opinions

i like nixos a lot but i couldn't really find anything i disagree with in this very fair, relatively negative two-year usage evaluation of nixos. it's a good read if you're thinking of installing the OS, good to know what you're getting into:

Been using NixOS for a few months and, it's been a rather double-edged distro so far. The declarative nature is quite liberating? (albeit mildly inconvenient).

But getting a dev environment working using a largely undocumented ecosystem and under-documented libraries has been far too frustrating.
