Today's Headline And then one day, while I read aloud to my husband the news and felt the widening hole in my heart, he raised his hand to quiet me. I followed his gaze out the window to see in the yard a small fluffy thing with black and white eyespots on its head. A northern pygmy owl beside our door, stout body slightly smaller than my fist. It turned its neck a full half circle to look at me with bright yellow eyes. In an instant, I shifted from disgust with the world to awe. Awe for this fierce bespeckled miracle, this wonder of feather and beak and claw, this small being in the grass looking back at me as if to say, Here is also the news. How surprising the world can be. How quickly, when I let it, amazement overwrites my fear and makes of the hole in my heart a home. -Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION WILL DIE TONIGHT My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools. Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's "keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's "we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight." It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before. "It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time. A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead. @michaelfdubois Mukad A QuBoy @michacifdubois

The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive

Project for Awesome is the best time of the year. People come together to teach each other about cool organizations that are working to make the world better. People raise money through goofy perks. People entertain others with art, cronching, and confetti for 48 hours.

Gallaudet University is a proud symbol of the deaf community. Yet in its 124 years of existence, this prestigious university has never had a president who is hearing impaired. Its Board of Trustees has never included a majority of hearing impaired people. Indeed, when the chairperson of the Board states that “deaf people are not ready to function in a hearing world,” and when a hearing candidate for president is selected over several qualified deaf candidates, it is no surprise that the students of Gallaudet have joined together in protest. The Board of Trustees has an obligation to respond to student concerns with sensitivity. There is no time to resolve this dispute equitably. The problem is not that the students do not hear. The problem is that the hearing world does not listen. The entire nation owes the students of Gallaudet its gratitude for reminding us once again that each of us has the ability and the right to achieve. I urge the Board of the University to move forward and recognize the justice of its students’ demands. In Solidarity, Jesse L. Jackson
