There’s no way I could do it. I’m not even that skillful with an extended metaphor in any format !

I liked the earth in the frying pan — it’s reminiscent of the old “This is your brain on drugs” campaign.

A particularly interesting choice for Earth Day, David — and so skillfully executed.

Interesting take, my friend. If we accept purple as the symbol of royalty, did the mother wear purple humbly, or did she not wear it because she didn’t think she deserved to do so?

😲 I posed the poem question to you today! I think that’s a first!

Thank you for adding denial to the conversation. I’m not sure that my mother recognized those tender mercies very often but, like you, she simply may not have acknowledged them for herself and, under her influence, her daughters struggled similarly. They just weren’t a part of HER world view.

This may well be my favorite of all your “SunriseMagics” so far, Jean!

I may well be overidentifying with this poem, but for me those who are committed to being — first and foremost — dutiful often miss the “tender mercies” that Michael Lavers writes about in yesterday’s poem.

I have long admired Levertov’s ability to address both peace and nature in her poetry, whether she was writing about Vietnam, the Civil Rights movement in the U.S., or — as in your example — Ars Poetica.

“Taught Me Purple”
— Evelyn Tooley Hunt

I, too, learned duty from my mother — not a bad lesson, but insufficient in and of itself.

It isn’t always easy, but it’s a psychic life saver.

Lavers’ answer is that you praise each day however you can.

Are you talking about finding joy even in what it feels like to grieve followed by: “Wanting to sleep instead of bear what you must”?

That’s the one that took me aback.

I have a guess. Do you want me to take it?
