From glowing cats to wombats, fluorescent mammals are much more common than you’d think After combing through museum collections, our team of researchers found a whopping 125 fluorescent mammal species – from polar bears and dolphins, to leopards, zebras and wombats.

And here is a short article from @theconversation.com that gives a bit of an explainer 🧪

Parrots in general are my favourite birds, with Bourke's parrots my favourite parrot by a narrow margin. Lorrikeets in general are my least favourite parrots: loud, messy, gaudy and so bitey.

At Fowler's Gap Research Station, we could tell how hot it was going to be each day by how close the wildlife was to the house. When I walked in and found a roo in the kitchen, I knew we were in for some extreme temperatures! #WildOz

As part of his PhD on the dietary ecology of meerkats, Walter Jubber carefully examined the diet of meerkats in the Kalahari. Although we like to think they feast on scorpions all the time (like my photo), over 70% of their diet is beetles. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Misconceptions and Set-Points For decades, the concept of a thermoregulatory "set-point" has been a cornerstone of physiological research, yet its definition and application remain surprisingly inconsistent across disciplines. Our recent study, spear-headed by the inimitable Dr. Duncan Mitchell, soon to be published in Biological Reviews, revisits and clarifies this fundamental concept by bridging perspectives from control theory and thermal biology. We explore how the set-point framework has been misinterpreted, and we argue for a more precise definition rooted in negative feedback principles.

Revisiting concepts of thermal physiology: understanding negative feedback and set‐point in mammals, birds, and lizards The thermoregulatory system of homeothermic endotherms operates to attain thermal equilibrium, that is no net loss or gain of heat, where possible, under a thermal challenge, and not to attain a set-...
