2024 Top 10 Innovations The latest group of winning technologies has a little something for everyone—from scientists at the lab bench to those in the clinic and even the classroom.

It’s incredibly gratifying to see our work on Direct RNA sequencing getting recognised in this way. Congratulations to all the team at @oxfordnanopore.bsky.social who helped us to make it a reality!

Quite often, academic founders get disillusioned by the realisation that customers don’t care how clever the science is, they tend to want something faster and cheaper than what they’ve already got. Insert inevitable Henry Ford quote, but it’s usually the reality

Depends what we mean by founder as well - you can be a founder without being the academic whose work the company sprang from

Doing great science doesn’t necessarily mean you can turn it into a great business. But if you can identify who your customers are and can see things from their perspective - which of their real-world problems you’re solving - then you stand a chance

Intentional, but definitely a mistake: I
filled a thick-walled plastic bottle with a mixture of methane and oxygen (collected over water), and lit it to see what it would do. I got my hearing back 15 mins later, just in time to teach my class. The bottle was torn apart

Careless radioactive sanger sequencing made my pipettes hot. Luckily P32 has a short half life so I shut everything in a drawer for a few months until it went away

Have done the same with dry ice - it froze & cracked the waste pipe but then sublimed away. Everything looked fine until the sink leaked onto the floor

First ever post here! I’m absolutely delighted to be starting my new job today as CSO at Enhanc3dGenomics! I’ll be working with the amazing team here to unlock new therapeutic targets by looking at 3D genomic architecture. If you’re attending AGBT24 please come to my talk on Thursday to hear more!
