Sam Kieth did not bend for comics. Comics bent to him. I won't call his manner of drawing merely a style because that implies some level of artifice. Maybe not since Kirby had mainstream comics seen an artist with less filter between his imagination and the printed page.

Still reeling over the death of Sam Kieth. Sam was kind & thoughtful and his art was emotional, exciting, & original. I worked w/ him on an Arkham Asylum OGN and he treated the book like a cross between a Universal monster movie & a Kubrick film. Sam was a comics mad scientist and he will be missed.
Today is the birthday of comicbook artist Al Williamson. Though he’s probably most famous for his award-winning artwork on Flash Gordon in the 60s, Williamson did lend his penciling skills to another popular sci-fi franchise a couple decades later…
