Today marks the anniversary of the release of John Boorman’s #fantasy masterpiece, Excalibur (1981). It is one of my top five favorite films.
Question for my fellow fantasy genre aficionados: do you consider Excalibur to be a #SwordandSorcery story?

War of the Monsters for the PS2 is one of my all-time favorite video games. Players pick one of about a dozen monsters, and then go one-on-one against the other monsters in city-destroying combat. There’s a single-player story mode, too.

I would have been totally down for this back in the day. I love the Lando character, and Williams could easily have carried a movie without the rest of the #StarWars cast. In fact I still am down for this, as long as we get Donald Glover as Lando.

I have no idea what the context of this amalgamation character of Flash and Superman is, but I do know that it’s a completely badass design!

I wanted to post something related to Easter, but it’s not necessarily easy to find a nerd reference that incorporates a messianic protagonist, blood, and bunnies. Thankfully, we have Watership Down.
Happy Easter! 🐰

I hope everyone is having an excellent #Thorsday! May you all be slaying whatever dragons assail you this day!

Nichelle Nichols was an under appreciated beauty back in her day. She was the first TV crush I remember having as a kid, and I thought she was every bit as gorgeous as Linda Carter or Farrah Fawcett.

This painting captures everything that I love about D&D, all of the emotions, the atmosphere, the drama, and the sense of wonder.

Today is the birthday of actor Leonard Nimoy. His most famous role, Starfleet Commander Spock, is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, and he was a big influence on me when I was a kid. Thanks for all the memories, Mr. Nimoy.

I only know the Brave Reideen from the #ShogunWarriors toys and the comicbooks from the 70s. His pseudo-Egyptian styling and ability to transform into ‘God Bird’ form (he was the first transforming robot!) made him stand out from the other giant robos.

Today is the birthday of comicbook artist Al Williamson. Though he’s probably most famous for his award-winning artwork on Flash Gordon in the 60s, Williamson did lend his penciling skills to another popular sci-fi franchise a couple decades later…

On this day in 1974, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla premiered. #Mechagodzilla has since become one of Big G’s most fearsome and enduring foes, appearing in Showa era, Heisei era, Millenium era, and the Monsterverse movies.

#Godzilla vs Megalon, the 13th Godzilla film, premiered on this day in 1973. It’s most notable for the introduction of giant robot hero #JetJaguar, and for being the campiest of the #Showa era movies (which is saying a lot!) I, of course, loved it!

Destroy All Muppets was my favorite of all the Muppet movies.

I know absolutely nothing about Phantom Starkiller, other than he looks completely badass! Did he originate as a toy or a comicbook? Is he a good guy or a bad guy? So many questions!

On this day in 1972, Godzilla vs. Gigan premiered. Gigan was not only one of Godzilla’s nastiest foes, but he’s also one of my favorite Kaiju monsters ever. Happy birthday, Terror Tummy!

A concept design for Marvel’s ROM character. Note the interesting choice to add color to ROM’s armor, which is a departure from the solid gray toy the comic was based on. The final design for ROM in the comic would be completely chrome metallic with no color.

Concept art for The Fifth Element, Luc Besson’s 1997 sci-fi cult classic movie starring Bruce Willis (the cab driver) and Milla Jovivich (the woman who quite literally fell into his life.) My main takeaway from this pic is, “Why the hell didn’t the raccoon make it to the final film?”

On this day in 1985, TSR published DL1: Dragons of Despair for #Dungeons&Dragons. This introduced the Dragonlance setting, which spawned dozens other game supplements and nearly 200(!) novels over the years.

While the origional #Dragonlance novels are flawed, I loved them when I first read them. And it was fascinating to see Weis and Hickman grow as authors as the series progressed. The death of Sturm Brightblade was the most memorable moment of the trilogy for me.

This new droid MA-X1M seems a bit, I dunno, off. Sinister or something. Diabolic, maybe? Nah, that wouldn’t make sense. I mean, it’s not like a droid can drag someone off to Hell, right?

Finieous Fingers was a comic strip by J.D. Webster that appeared in Dragon Magazine in the late 70s and early 80s. The strip was a hilarious take on #Dungeons&Dragons, and the Finieous Treasury Edition was a favorite of mine. I still have my original copy!

Some early pre-production art for the 1980 #FlashGordon movie. The aesthetic looked much more vintage at this stage. Lion Man is even in there! How cool would this have been?

Which was cooler, Space Ghost’s Phantom Cruiser or G-Force’s God Phoenix?

This art was on the box of every Transformer toy for the first years of that toy line. This was before any of the characters were even finalized, which is why Megatron appears as just a minor figure in the background. Which G1 Transformer was your favorite?

On this day in 1993, “Babylon 5: The Gathering” premiered in syndication across the US, launching TV’s greatest science fiction saga. The story of Babylon 5 unfolded over five seasons, pioneering the multi-season story arcs that are commonplace in today’s TV landscape.

I know the Lion Force gets all the love, but this robot, Dairugger 15, is the Voltron I remember watching when I was a kid. The Fleet Force team came first, while the far more famous and recognized GoLion robot was actually the third iteration of Voltron.
