Hah we've got this one at the Manitoba survey too. Makes me cringe every time I see it.
Did you know? Pixar’s film, Hoppers, worked with real scientists to reflect real-world ecology. 🦫 Dr. Emily Fairfax, one of the experts, also authored GSA Special Paper 562, showing how beavers support biodiversity and help landscapes recover from wildfire.

Udder disaster my friends!
Capturing the moment flowing water turns into ice (a mineral).
"I'm not saying you should resist in spite of the risk [but] BECAUSE of the risk. The risk is what helps you remember... there's something that learning is for... thinking is for... work is for... YOU are for, the discovery of which belongs to you."

It's important to thank the volunteers around you. We all do it for different reasons, and are there for the ups and downs. Here's to more ups and thanks to all who I have volunteered with over the last 20 years.
Schools cancelled so it's time to go for a walk.
Guess what. Glaciers aren't as good at eroding the landscape as we might have thought. New paper with collaborators from Quebec, France, and across the US. Internationalism lives on at least in science!

After about 5 years (!) of keeping secrets, I am so excited that Disney Pixar's Hoppers is finally coming out on March 6th!
Back in 2021, Pixar emailed me asking if I could give a talk about my research to their employees. Then another talk. And another.

Amazing!!
Absolutely agree that this needs an update! Someone please give Evan more resources!
Our new paper is out, in proper format, in CJES today. It's a continuation of our stratigraphic framework development in the southwest HBL, together with Paleo environment data (UofT) and optical dating (UFV).
Absolutely true - I am more and more aware every day of the need to question established 'common knowledge'.
I also told students to me more like the cuttlefish - again, don't take the marshmallow because it is quick and easy and right in front of them

Happy Halloween!
Parallel to ice flow? Could be push moraines or deGeer moraines if perpendicular, parallel.....very odd!
I've got one with very minor revisions sitting for 30 days without acceptance. Super annoying
I’m gonna miss the Permafrost Terminology Action Group of the Canadian Permafrost Association. Most of us made it to GeoManitoba 2025 for the Glossary launch and photo op 🙌 #scicomm
Two kids with bike helmets peeling layers of the drying dessicated mud.
Stopped the bike ride for a little geology. Fascinating mud cracks that peel off in layers, and sticky clay underneath. Little minds shocked and amazed when they learned that mud cracks are found as 'fossils' too. #geology
Congratulations to Mr. Mesich who successfully defended his MSc today at UWaterloo. It's been a pleasure serving as your co-supervisor with Dr. Ross.
*Quaternary stratigraphy of the Gods and Yakaw river areas, northeastern Manitoba*
Fire-induced rock spalling! This area burnt about 1-2 months ago. All of the little rock shards on the ground are spalled pieces of the granite boulder, overlying burnt soil and moss.
Before seeing this in person, I didn't really consider the mechanical weathering effects of fire!

Sometimes dogs are just ridiculous.
Oh ok. Well, enjoy your vacation time, or at least Manitoba time
Two kids de-husking freshly picked Manitoba hazelnuts
Hazelnuts in their very hard shells - will be toasted, cracked and shelled, toasted again and turned into hazelnut butter.
Campground foraging near the Manitoba Escarpment. A lot of work for a little bit butter. Makes me grateful for farms and grocery stores.
