Four challenges for usable/applied archaeologies Here, we respond to the useful comments from Kerr and Isendahl by clarifying four core elements of our argument. We frame these as four challenges for the future of usable archaeologies and hope they prove helpful in refining how archaeology might contribute meaningfully to contemporary global issues.

Check out the responses 👇 2/2

In a 'race against time,' archaeologists uncovered Roman-era footprints from a Scottish beach before the tide washed them away Archaeologists raced against the tide to record a unique set of footprints made 2,000 years ago on a Scottish beach.

Saving new Roman era footprints 👣 “The team of archaeologists worked in wind gusts up to 55 mph, racing to document the prints as the site was eroded...They used drones, cameras and, later in the lab, 3D modeling software to record images of the archaeological site.” by Dr. @killgrove.bsky.social

A pet cow named Veronika can scratch her back with a broom, the first scientifically documented case of tool use in cows.

“Perhaps the absurd thing was not the absurdity of a cow using tools," one researcher said, "but the absurdity of us never thinking that a cow might be intelligent.”

Admitting, his were among the books that piqued my interest in archaeology.

Later actually studying the past of course revealed the problematic angles of these narratives.

Still giving him credit for sparking curiosity.

On the Dachstein glacier in Austrian alps, archaeology of my generation’s childhood begins.
As the ice melts, remnants of a 1970s ski lift station re-emerge. No word on whether it was documented before it has been dismantled and removed.

It's so weird how LLMs know so much about things I don't know anything about, and yet make fundamental and basic errors about things I do know anything about. Oh well, I'm sure that's a coincidence.
