New post this week! The first in a series on ancient Spalatum; originally a Greek colony but later a Roman town and then the location of Diocletian's Palace in the late 3rd century CE.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The partially restored Temple of Apollo in Side (Turkey) was constructed in the latter half of the 2nd century AD and was designed in the Corinthian order. Originally, the temple featured 6 white marble columns across its front. Currently, 5 of these columns have been restored.
Memorial to a Roman Standard Bearer of the 1st Century. Found in the foundations of Hexham Cathedral in 1881. It is thought to have come from the Roman fort of Coria at Corbridge. The scene represents a mounted soldier riding over the enemy.

A large grassy bowl on a sunny day. Two small figures at the bottom suggest the scale of the earthworks.
The #amphitheatre at #Cirencester, (Corinium Dobunnorum). Built in the 2nd century on the site of a quarry, estimated to have held up to 8,000 people. Even after 1,500+ years of erosion (since it was abandoned), the earthworks are monumental.

The 3rd Marquess of Bute, had a keen interest (amongst other things) in history, architecture & archaeology. He engaged the architect William Burges to remodel the castle in 1868. This is a view of the south wall, with Burges alterations such as the bell tower. The lower part of the wall has light coloured Roman stone, with a band of red stone separating it from the 19th Century wall above.
Cardiff Castle, Cardiff, Wales
A Roman fort of the 3rd Century CE, the fourth Roman fort built on or near this site.
In 1889 these remains were rediscovered & after an archaeological dig, they were rebuilt on the same lines. A band of red stone separating old & new walls.

In Ladenburg you can see the remains of the western side of its forum with some wall paintings. Ladenburg was called Lopodunum in the Roman times. It is a town in northwestern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It lies on the right bank of the river Neckar. #RomanSiteSaturday
Haha! I just realised that I posted this a day early. It’s a public holiday in the UK. Apologies but #GoodFriday has #RomanSiteSaturday vibes.
Foundations of the temple of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, promised by Rome’s kings Tarquinius Priscus and Tarquinius Superbus in the 6th C BC, and inaugurated by Consul M. Horatius Pulvillus (early Republican) on 13th September 509 BC.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The Temple of Augustus and Rome in Ankara (Türkiye) features the most complete copy of the Res Gestae Divi Augusti inscribed in both Latin and Greek on its walls. This temple was constructed between 25 and 20 BC after Ancyra was designated as the new capital of Galatia.
Monumental stones frame entry/exit from raised temple area, with several courses of stones of a smaller rectangular structure in front, and view over large stone-bounded square forum area paved in the centre. Beyond a row of columns is the square of basilica area with further columns. In the distance is the sea, with land just visible on the horizon. There are trees on the edges of the site, with one palm in the forum area.

Inside the vastness that is the Colosseum. A phenomenal piece of Roman construction all in the name of death and spectacle
Does #RomanSiteSaturday still count if the site is in #Rome? Or is it just an excuse for me to show off my #holiday snaps 😉
