We had a meeting on April 17 attended by over 100 cultural heritage workers. We struck a temporary committee to carry out the work resulting from the dialogue. There is representation on it from archivists, museum workers, historians, genealogists, historical society folks, and librarians.

“During a time when most people have a search engine in their pocket, one might think boxes of records are now irrelevant. But, an internet search or chatbot prompt cannot replace making a trip to the archives, simply because not everything is digitized” #cdnHist

This was a good meeting, chaired by @millarlaura.bsky.social and attended by 113 people from museums, archives, libraries, historical societies, along with historians. A temporary advocacy committee is being set up to steer the work coming out of today’s discussion.

This is a really odd argument because I think at the heart of it, there is a deep misunderstanding about what writing is for. I write to communicate my thoughts and ideas, and to bring people along with me, which AI cannot do for me because it isn't me.

🧵 The Canadian federal government’s 2025 budget has allocated:
More business tax breaks including for fossil fuels sector
$925 million for AI
$81.8 billion over 5 years for military
However, this comes at the expense of cultural heritage.

Had an amazing time at the McGill Canadian Scottish Studies Colloquium yesterday. Thanks so much for the change to talk about the St Andrew's Society's archives!

The AHA, with American Oversight, filed a lawsuit challenging a DOJ memo declaring the Presidential Records Act unconstitutional—threatening access to millions of records, including at the National Archives.
This case is about public access to our nation’s history.

My parents took this picture off of their tv during the moon landing in 1969. And now we are headed back their again.
Screenshot. What looks to be an AI generated image of people panning for gold above a description of an “online learning” event about the 1858 gold rush
Hey @royalbcmuseum.bsky.social - why are you using an AI generated image when you have a wealth of digitized images and paintings from the gold rush that you could use?
Miami has hurricanes, right?
Just thinking such a tall building was tempting fate...
Or dumb.
I like that CTV News classifies this as entertainment, and not a serious look at faith :)
