It gets worse. The quote from the police chief is literally why women, especially black women, don’t trust police. ‘Ongoing domestic dispute’ implies wrongdoing on both sides. There is nothing in this story that indicates Cerina did anything except file for divorce and try to protect her children.
And that’s just trans women—there are even more trans and gender-diverse people on staff at @chicago.suntimes.com and @wbez.org more broadly!
Oh I've been on the bus with this guy in the past couple weeks. Bus driver was unamused.
Last summer, an incarcerated woman in Missouri had a hot flash while we were on the phone. Since then, I've been talking to people around the country about what it's like to go through perimenopause and menopause in prison. Here's the result, co-published by @themarshallproject.org and @19thnews.org

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights is reporting an uptick in ICE activity across the Chicago area over the last week, incl. reported abductions at Cook County courthouses and immigration check ins.
Chicago neighborhoods of reported activity include Rogers Park, Austin and Pilsen.
If you're coming to Chicago early for #ONA26, you might get to see some awesome costumes from people heading to C2E2 (Chicago's version of Comic-Con)
Yikes! Getting doored is a rite of passage, but getting any body part run over is not! So glad nothing's broken.
This is beautifully done. Cheers (and virtual hugs) to @lamthuyvo.bsky.social and the crew at @puddingviz.bsky.social

“Nor was it the first time the nonprofit has had to call police on those neighbors, who have also previously threatened its students with references to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, she said.”
This woman, US citizen living in Skokie, was detained at Ohare yesterday, taken to Broadview, then transferred to a detention facility in Wisconsin, now released. We know all this not because of DHS, who repeatedly denied that they even had her, but because her phone was pinging in those locations.
Thanks! It was fun to put together.

Fun term at #NICAR26 lightning talks from @kylieclifton.bsky.social: Pivot table curious
Title slide that reads "How to make your charts go up and to the right"
Excited to give a lightning talk soon at #NICAR26 on how to make any chart go up and to the right. It's a little bit silly, like many lightning talks.
Now there's an actual live link to this job posting for a data analyst at @inquirer.com

Job posting for data analyst at The Philadelphia Inquirer
If you're at #NICAR26 and have questions about this job on the job board, I'm happy to talk! It's a role on my old team. (I'm not involved in hiring, though.)
And of course, also great insights and advice from the whole panel on working with reporters and editors who are excited about what's possible now, and training them to do it safely. #NICAR26
In session on editing AI-powered journalism (code and stories), @meghanhoyer.bsky.social has had some great lines:
"That's not a story; that's a blob"
"Trying to keep people from yeeting things into the paper"

This story, from @natezuke.bsky.social, is absolutely wild. A trans woman who never changed her gender marker was issued a letter invalidating her license. At the DMV they cut up her license, which had an "M" marker.

New post!
Many Americans hold contradictory opinions on the same policies. Question wording effects can swing opinions by 20+ points on immigration, the budget, and transgender rights.
That's a problem for people who interpret polls for a living.

NEW FROM ME: The deportation plane stuck in the blizzard took off this morning after 31 hours, but not before exposing a much bigger problem with exceedingly long delays on ICE flights.
