BGE is coming to an end, but don't worry: we have amazing news!✨
BGE+, heir to BGE, has been selected for funding 🥳💥
BGE+ aims to build a #biodiversity #genomics infrastructure in #Europe. 💪

📢New PhD paper out!
Science communication & education are one of my priorities, which is why, a few years ago, I accepted the challenge to develop a one-year scientific project with local high school students.
What started as a side project has now turned into a paper!

🙌 Many thanks to all the speakers and participants who made our Genomics for Biodiversity Conference a success!
It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and learn from @biogeneurope.bsky.social case studies and their results.

This work was led by former MSc student João Souto, with @joao-pedro-marques.bsky.social @meloferreiraj.bsky.social and co-authors!
Using whole genomes, we detected introgression from three species - L. granatensis, L. timidus, and L. europaeus - into the broom hare. Some of it was likely layered across past hybridization events!
These are the genomic echoes of hares' Pleistocene history.

📣 NEW PAPER!
News from our group in @journal-evo.bsky.social !
The broom hare (Lepus castroviejoi) carries traces of multiple genomic ancestries, revealing a complex history of admixture in Iberia!

📢 New #BGE-@ergabiodiv.bsky.social publication!
It’s time to #harmonise practices for assessing genome-wide genetic diversity. 🧬 #Standardisation is key to meet the needs of #stakeholders in biodiversity #conservation.

We focus on:
👉 understanding how populations responded to past climate shifts & might adapt to current climate change
👉 studying the genetics & evolution of key adaptations
👉 using genomics to design biodiversity applications for conservation
👉 clariyfing species evolution & systematics
Our research group uses genomic tools to study evolutionary responses to changes in climate in natural populations, including processes such as local adaptation, hybridization, speciation.
