The Miharu Takizakura: Fukushima’s Ancient Waterfall Cherry The Miharu Takizakura stands as one of Japan’s three most celebrated cherry trees, a thousand-year-old Benishidare-zakura (Red Weeping Cherry) located in the town of Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture. Designated as a National Natural Monument in 1922, this massive tree reaches a height of 13.5 meters, with its crown spreading over 20 meters from east to west. Its name, "Waterfall Cherry," is an apt description of its heavy, cascading branches that, when in full bloom, create the illusion of a pink torrent flowing toward the earth. This photograph captures the tree in a soft, ethereal mist, which highlights the gnarled, ancient texture of its trunk against the delicate density of the blossoms. The sheer scale of the Takizakura is supported by a series of wooden braces, a common practice in Japan to preserve the structural integrity of historical trees. Surrounding the base is a traditional ishigaki (stone wall), which serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose, grounding the tree within the rural landscape. Each spring, typically in mid-to-late April, the tree becomes a pilgrimage site, its enduring life serving as a powerful symbol of resilience and the cyclical beauty of the natural world.
The Miharu Takizakura is an ancient weeping cherry tree in Fukushima, Japan, one of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks. Over 1,000 years old, its name translates to "waterfall cherry tree," reflecting the way its massive, cascading branches create a stunning flow of pale pink blossoms.

On a walk around #Conwy yesterday, I spotted something I hadn't noticed before. This magnificent #Gothic railway arch, built in 1840, through the #Medieval walls. It even continues the castellated parapet! Zoom in, and you can see where bits were chipped away as trains got bigger! #photograph #photo

Be like the river:
Liberated of its past
Unconcerned about the future
Authentic in its present decisions
Infinitely flexible and spontaneous
Energetic by nature
Only truly as it is in this very moment
Already free
Be like the river. Flow.

Happy Tuesday! We had another quiet sunrise but the balance between the cloud lines, the sun, and the horizon worked very nicely; and then the even waves up to the shore provided a nice supporting foundation. Tap for full size. I hope you have a great day!

A heavily worked oil painting still life on gessoed board. The ceramic owl on the windowsill and the African carved bust on the right have both appeared in various paintings and drawings.
Still life in oil sold at a Cambridge Drawing Society exhibition in 2020. This one shows quite a bit of impasto built up during the process of composition.
