Since the week before last, at My Serenity Sanctuary, we have been celebrating some truly amazing women, like Civil Rights activist Dovey Johnson Roundtree. Last week, we continued the festivities for Women's History Month by highlighting another extraordinary figure, professor and activist Josephine Silone Yates. This week, we're turning our attention to one of the most iconic voices in American jazz: Billie Holiday.

Her Story: Holiday came into the world as Eleanora Fagan, born April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia. Raised amid poverty and instability, she found refuge in music, teaching herself to sing by listening to jazz records. She named herself after her father, jazz guitarist Clarence Holiday, and her favorite actress, Billie Dove and Billie Holiday was born. The Music. Billie Holiday was voted Best Jazz Vocalist by Downbeat Magazine readers. This is one of the most respected honors in jazz. In addition, her voice, wrought with emotion and timing unlike any other, redefined what it meant to interpret a song. "Downbeat Magazine" - Holiday was recognized as the most expressive voice of the era. Signature Songs - "Strange Fruit," "God Bless the Child," "Summertime," "All of Me."

Her Legacy. 1939 - Billie recorded "Strange Fruit." It was about a haunting protest against lynching in America. Also, it was one of the earliest and powerful pieces of protest art in history. 1956 - Her autobiography "Lady Sings the Blues" inspired a generation. 1987 - Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumous. 2000 - Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Wellness Reflection. What does it mean to raise your voice, especially when the world tries to silence you? Billie Holiday teaches us that expressing ourselves is a vital form of self-care. So, for Women's History Month, we celebrate every woman who has boldly shared her truth, whether it is with a powerful shout, a gentle whisper, or a fierce defiance. In this session our guest speaker, Dr. Destiny Huff will talk about how racism and ableism hurt Black and Latine students with disabilities at school. Schools in the United States are more likely to punish, silence, and segregate Black and Latine students with disabilities. This discrimination against Black and Latine students with disabilities is racist and ableist. This presentation talks about how systemic racism and ableism in schools hurts multiply-marginalized students. From biased referrals to punishments that exclude them, students of color with disabilities face more barriers to access, inclusion and affirmation.
