A great blue heron displays its striking beauty in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the composition focuses on the bird’s head, neck, and upper body. Its neck is centered in the frame, while its head tilts downward and its head plumes stream horizontally. The nictitating membrane is just beginning to close, casting a subtle shadow across its eye.
