Day One : I am number four (The search for interesting composition)

Ok, so I published this a while back, and then everything went chaotic, so it's been sitting there patiently for me to share it.

Time for number four.

... and no-one knows who I am in the States.

Well... they don't know who I am anywhere else for that matter.

But that's beside the point.

Thank you to those who already entered.

Apologies to those who can't.

Now I have to send a copy of my book to the British Library.

Should I use a rocket?

I say many things, I baffle it with logic, try to prove without a shadow of a doubt, using charts, studies & guest speakers, that it's wrong & I do know what I'm talking about. Most days I win. But it's a hard worker, just like me & I know without a shadow of a doubt it'll be there again tomorrow. 😅

Everyone knows writing isn't easy, and there's been number of challenges recently, making everything harder. But it's compelling when you know that your characters are in trouble and only you can save them... and save them you must!

It really gets past any excuses.

It is really quite surprising how you can keep a whole story in your head for decades, and you can get instant recall on key parts of it. And then you re-read over certain sections you wrote ages ago, off in the future books, and find you've completely forgotten them. Baffling.

Aha! I've been stuck for a while on a tricky scene in EP2, but just found the right solution that does 3 things at once, & all it took was working on something else for a week.

Now if only 'finding an audience' was as easy as me wandering off & them just turning up. 😂

There's a lot to take into account when writing a series.

Especially when strange things are going on.

Can't wait to get the full story out of my head.

It takes up a lot of space.

Many won't understand the hard work gone into this.

They'll just discount it.

But I don't mind. These clips are not the art, they are not the book(s).

But on my low days, when I feel that all is dark, these give me back my spark. They help me to escape back to Onaia.

Finally! Things are starting to make sense.

Great to see my book in unexpected places:

(Even if it is at P.O.D. prices that no normal person would pay for unknown author.)

(I suppose I'm looking for un-normal readers then?)

I'm still working on that particular Novella, but it contains two characters from my current series who end up in a situation where an 'explosive red dress' is the all important factor. I'll have to tell you later if it lands or not.

It might remain permanently stuck in the air, missing the ground.

The text reads:

"How is it you always make everything sound like bread soup?" she asked loud enough for him to hear. Her grin breaking into a chuckle.
"What?" Redley replied, baffled, stepping towards her, he could hear his team start up various conversations as Leandro returned to the group. What Amata had said truly hadn't made any sense, and clearly—by her reaction—that fact was broadcasting across his face.
"Oh, is that not a phrase you Hearters have?" She tilted her head as if in surprise, but he knew her enough. He knew she was just distracting the both of them, avoiding thinking about what was to come next.
He deepened his puzzlement at her in reply.
She widened her yes, "Ah right, well… bread soup —it's damn easy to make, and you have that habit of making everything sound straightforward," she spoke much more quietly now that he was closer.
"Do I? I didn't realise you were evaluating my rallying speeches," he grinned.
"Not all of them. But I've seen enough over the years."
"I see, well, I have to confess, I'm still trying to work out if 'bread soup' is a compliment or dig."
"What's really gonna twist your noggin' is people always forget bread soup's only easy when you've got bread, but if you don't, it's a pain in the ass!"
He laughed, shaking his head.

What I like about this scene, and the dialog, is that it does multiple things at once (which is what I'm told good dialog is always supposed to do). It tells you more about the two characters involved, it builds their relationship, and it gives extra about the world and their challenges.

4 weeks ago 2 0 1 0

The characters are talking about 'bread soup' and it's literally like reading from a different world. I have no reference for it. I've never had bread soup?! I'll probably find other people read it as terrible dialog (hopefully not), but my head seems happy with it —so I can't complain.

4 weeks ago 2 0 1 0

I love those moments where things just roll & I don't know what causes them or how to get to it. They're often the places where I forget what I've written, so coming back to those scenes I'm almost like a reader—which is fun.
I've just come across a scene I'd totally forgotten with dialog like that.

4 weeks ago 2 0 1 0

If I'm focused on dialog however, my process sounds quite a bit like your own. Although, sometimes it's different. Often it is a lot of work, handling things from multiple angles (as you say) & a lot of visualisation/reading aloud. But other times the characters just say the right things, magically.

Great question! My line on this one is that I don't exactly know what happens. And it depends on the flow I'm in. If I'm mid writing action I tend to put in placeholder stuff that I burn as soon as I read it again —for fear of the dialog police finally proving to me that I'm a bad writer.

Argh!

Quandaries... I'm at a crossroads in EP2. Stuck between two directions—a choice of what would be the more believable.

Either way I go means rejigging different areas.

Yet, trying to be objective on your own work is sometimes difficult.

Think that means a long walk is in order.

Writing is such an odd craft...

Very different from reading.

When working on a scene, esp. coming back to one left long enough you forgot you wrote it, there are terrible parts that show how much you've learned.

Then, there are the bits that still make you laugh and levitate.

I'm sure I can't be the only one who has to do this gorilla-style filming.

It's just that I guess most people are sensible enough to do it indoors.

By way of apology, he found an intelligent question to ask.

1 month ago 2 0 0 0

This was fun however, and—before people start saying that I could've written more if I didn't make this (as if they would). That'd only be true if I'm able to write no matter the time. But I often find there's a weather of the mind. And right now, it's too stormy for words—but visuals are just fine.

It has been so great getting back into just the writing side of things that I thought I'd create a mini short... getting ahead of myself.

It will likely be still another 6 months before I'm able to get EP2's draft to a publishable state.

I wish I could write full time, but that's not yet to be.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

Happy Pi Day! 🥧

Let's have a silly one for today: What would your character's favorite type of pie be?

Or, if pie isn't their thing, what would their favorite dessert be, in general?

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

1 month ago 119 9 31 109

Yes, I'm sure they are! The only problem with 'falling in love' with a unique and proprietary dessert (like the Lateral Cake), is when its inventor (and the 'keeper of the keys', so to speak, with regard to its secret recipe) vanishes and cannot be found.

I wish I could say this was hypothetical.

1 month ago 1 1 1 0

Distance isn't keen on pies, but she loves a good Lateral Cake! Which is kind of like a Mozart Cake but with more physics-defying layers involved. Worth loves his food and pastry, and would happily go for any pie, especially one involving apples and a name that sounds similar to "strudel".

An image of a lonely laptop, on a sea of table, lost in the cyphers of my local library... during Rhyme Time! :joy: At least that's what it used to be called when I brought my little ones here (for the uninitiated that means ~2 year olds coming to the library for a singalong). So yes, I timed the "quiet period at the library" wrong. But it's not like I have an abundance of choice when it comes to time slots, and that's what noise cancelling headphones are for, and... actually, it's a really nice sound to be avoiding. Crazy to think my little ones are now almost ten. Madness... Time is a definitely a trick played on use mortals.

It's so nice being back at it.

Starting from the beginning of EP2's draft.
Refactoring.

Mad the scenes you forget.
That catch you by surprise.
And still make you feel, many things..

A fake picture of not me, not in a night club, not listening to 'Turn the lights off'. You get the idea.... there's lots of blue, and I probably need a shave.

Feeling like Jon Hamm being calmly ambushed by a night club.

Back to writing on EP2!

No silly marketing or commercial things in the way.

This is where I started. It feels...

Awesome.

The search for EP1 paperback can wait.

Much more concerned for what's happening to Webb & Distance.
