Chronological but not functional aging of giant fiber (GF) descending neuron dendrite structure. Top left: Representative 3-D reconstruction of GF dendritic structure color-coded for the different dendritic domains that receive input from different modalities. The visual input dendrite is coded in red. Bottom left: Representative 3-D reconstruction of GF dendrites at the age of 3 (left) vs. 5 weeks (right). Right: Representative reconstruction of GF dendrites during chronological aging between weeks 7 and 11 from animals that show visually induced escape behavior (left column, responders) as compared to age-matched animas not showing visually induced escape behavior (right column, NRs).

Age-related decline is restricted to specific #neuron types & #brain regions. This study shows components of the #Drosophila escape motor circuit vary in susceptibility to #aging & stressors, with plastic components being vulnerable & hard-wired components robust @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/45gobl9

Trump's Harvard cuts threaten a giant in biomedical research: A database about the tiny fruit fly This spring, the Trump administration rescinded a grant that maintained FlyBase, a pillar of global basic research, as part of its broader $2.2 billion funding cuts at Harvard.

Harvard Funding Cuts Endanger the Massive Fruit Fly Database That Powers Genetic Research | News | The Harvard Crimson FlyBase lost a multimillion dollar grant when the Trump administration cut off Harvard’s federal funding in May. Now the repository is laying off staff — and researchers worldwide are worried.

Juvenile hormone regulates the maturation of sexually dimorphic naive ethanol olfactory preference in Drosophila melanogaster | Royal Society Open Science The molecular mechanisms underlying the maturation of innate reward behaviours remain poorly understood. We have identified a sexually dimorphic innate reward behaviour in Drosophila melanogaster that varies depending on the age, sex and mating status in ...

Giant study finds a research field that’s mostly reproducible Researchers assessed more than 1,000 results from fruit-fly immunity research published between 1959 and 2011. The majority of findings look verifiable.
