This webinar is on March 9th. This post had me rushing until I checked my calendar!
Today, I was informed about a trend to use chatgpt to create a caricature of you working at your job. Here's mine:

Clues for the #SundayFishSketch - #25DaysofFishmas mystery fish for Sunday December 21. 1. Salmonid species native to the North Pacific coast of North America from Washington state to the Bering Sea 2. Some members of this species migrate between the ocean and freshwater, while others stay in the same stream or lake their entire life 3. Its common name comes from a Charles Dickens character who wore colorful clothing โ a reference to this speciesโ bright breeding colors
Only one more #SundayFishSketch - #25DaysofFishmas mystery fish before the big day!
For Sunday December 21, sketch the species you think these clues are describing (don't spoil it early if you know it!). The answer will be revealed with the day's #Fishmas calendar! @lampichthys.bsky.social
WE can learn from them and collaborate with them.
WE can get larger grants
WE can contribute to the broader scientific community
WE can make more meaningful contributions at the global scale
WE can collaborate to develop new courses to improve students' stats/modeling knowledge.
Just my 2ยข
Let me remind you all the DEI helps make research more impactful with broader implications.
If we can BRING in top scientists from other backgrounds and RETAIN them,
(3/n)
I have had several conversations with professors at Canadian institutions saying that "if we want students who are great in [stats/modeling], we need to hire internationally."
Anecdotally, we clearly have some gaps. (2/n)
I'm surprised at how many Canadian scientists are complaining about this decision. (A thread)
Do I think Canadian scientists should have more funding, yes,
BUT
that doesn't mean we should invalidate this good decision. (1/n)
I recently picked up a drum set but I'm 33. Either the stress of getting a PhD is shaving years off my life, or it's a great stress relief for all ages!
The #25DaysofFishmas calendar with redear sunfish on Day 2
Rudolph, the red-eared reindeer! ๐ฆ
With ears so bright, the Redear Sunfish (Lepomis microlophus) guides us into Day 2 of #25DaysofFishmas! This member of the sunfish family found throughout the southeastern US is a warm-water loving ray of sun on a cold winter day โ๏ธ
The #25DaysofFishmas calendar with the Christmas darter on Day 1
๐ถItโs beginning to look a lot like #Fishmas๐ถ
Thereโs no better fish to kick off this yearโs #25DaysofFishmas than the aptly-named Christmas darter (Etheostoma hopkinsi)! We get our road trip started down in the southeastern US with this small species of fish who has big holiday spirit all year long
Do you have a link to this report? I'm only seeing the same two reports about the one editor.
Nerrrrrrrrrrrds!
To celebrate getting 100,000 followers on Bluesky, I am offering some of you fine folks the chance to join me on a 2026 shark research expedition. Really!

๐ถFrom Atlantic to Pacific, gee the fish facts are terrific!๐ถ
#25DaysofFishmas is hitting the road! While there's no place like H.O.M.E.S. for the holidays, we'll be traveling beyond the #GreatLakes this year to learn about freshwater fishes from across the US. The road trip kicks off December 1!
Dang, they seemed to have skipped over a lot of that when writing the article. It's too bad that this information wasn't widely available for us researchers or I could have avoided publishing here. I hope enough actions are underway and this will be resolved soon and prevented from occurring again.
During my experience with STOTEN, they did not ask for reviewer contact information, which may indicate that changes addressing the issue are underway.
This is unfortunate, especially considering that the malpractice seemed to have been done by one unethical author. I sincerely hope that my research along with the ~7K other published findings as reported in the article aren't stereotyped as accepted under false reviews.
๐ My first publication has been accepted in STOTEN!

Today was a great day at #ICFT
I had the privilege to present my research this morning, and I joined in on some song and dance in the evening at the banquet.
6 days of field work and likely the last until my next position. It's nice to get out of the office once in a while and relive why I chose this career path. It's also always a great time when working with the CFAAS crew at SIU.
Neglecting to consider mortalities can create bias in telemetry studies. The R package 'mort' identifies potential mortalities &/or expelled tags in passive telemetry arrays, filling an important gap in workflows when analysing passive telemetry data๐พ๐

Not a fish this week, but it's still an aquatic animal :)
