🤔 In the middle of a new energy crisis, how are governments choosing to spend public money? The negotiations around the next multi-year EU budget have started.
👀 Out of 17 analysed Member States, only 5 have set up a working group for stakeholder consultation: bankwatch.org/publication/...
Our submission highlights how recent changes to planning law in Ireland have fundamentally reshaped the nature of public body accountability in Ireland.

🗣️EJNI calls on Ireland to support energy communities with EU funding 💶
🔍 The negotiations around the next multi-year EU budget (2028-2034) have started. As part of a new funding architecture, every Member State will create a “National and Regional Partnership Plan” (NRPP) ⬇️
The intention is to make EU funding more strategic by linking investment and policy reforms to EU priorities and measurable outcomes.
However, our explainer explores key risks and concerns and how Irish CSOs can shape how EU funding will be planned and delivered after 2028. 💰🌱
National and Regional Partnership Plans (NRPPs) are a key feature of the EU Commission's proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework #MFF
Our ✨new✨explainer provides an intro to the NRPPs and what they could mean for Ireland. 📖⬇️

We were delighted to see that the transboundary issues and key recommendations were reflected in the end of mission statement 👇

We look forward to the publication of the full report at the UN Human Rights Council in March 2027 📖
In Dublin last week, EJNI met with Astrid Puentes Riaño, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to a Healthy Environment.🤝
🗣️We shared our concerns re the transoundary implications for a Human Right to a Healthy Environment for citizens living across the whole island of Ireland.
🟠 Correlation between Ireland's air pollution and failure to address both energy and transport poverty
🟠Based on the recs of the UN Special Rapporteur on HR and the Environment, there is a strong human rights argument for Ireland to adopt the WHO AQG values as ‘legally binding standards’.
We emphasise:
🔴 Ongoing failure to limit cross-border agri ammonia & NMVOC pollution
🔴 Existing CAS fails to integrate transboundary concerns
🔴Addressing Ireland's air pollution requires a hollistic approach
EJNI submitted a response to the @deptcee.bsky.social consultation on Ireland's Clean Air Strategy (CAS).

EJNI set out a summary of our priorities and recommendations for Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in July-December 2026; available here 📖 : ejni.net/publications...
Our paper provides answers to key questions on the #MFF and explores the choices at stake during Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026 which coincides with the politically sensitive phase of negotiations on the 2028–2034 MFF.
The EU's Multiannual Financial Framework #MFF defines the financial architecture within which all EU programmes operate. Spanning many areas such as climate, competitiveness, agriculture, & so on.🌱
AND establishes the rules that govern how funds are allocated, managed & monitored. 🔍
Our ✨new explainer✨ "The EU's Long-Term Budget and Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the EU" forms part of a series of EJNI outputs related to Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the EU (1 July to 31 December 2026).

✨New Paper✨
Both Northern Ireland and Ireland's Climate Acts are highly prescriptive laws.
Although there are important differences, both climate laws place a heavy emphasis on land use change as a key method of meeting legally binding emission and adaptation targets. ⬇️🎯
