José Manuel Capuletti. La danza de las ninfas, 1951
This work on silk from approximately 1904–05, titled Waves in Moonlight, is an evocative example of the mōrōtai (hazy style) pioneered by Yokoyama Taikan. The composition features a churning sea under a pale, full moon that emerges from a veil of dark, atmospheric clouds. Eschewing the traditional reliance on sharp outlines, Taikan uses delicate gradations of ink and subtle color to define the cresting waves and the soft, diffused lunar glow, creating a sense of infinite space and ethereal movement.
