‘The Antonine Altar’ - high relief from Ephesus, and busts of Hadrian (Antoninus Pius is behind him), Marcus Aurelius, and Lucius Verus.
In the ‘altar’ they are retrospectively depicted as a family in the year 138 CE. Marcus (left) is age 17, and Lucius (center) is 7.

‘The Parthian Monument,’ Ephesus Museum, Vienna
Bruegel worked in the studio of Flemish engraver Hieronymus Cock, whose ‘View of The Colosseum,’ 1551 seems to have compositional influence on ‘The Tower.’ Also, Bruegel would have seen this deconstructed Roman building himself.
