On a hiccoughing breath in, he blinks up at her and Wolfwood, utterly dazed as he lifts his head. His eyes fill further as he looks between them, agony and disbelief all tangled together . “We’re here.” Her voice sounds wobbly even to her own ears. “We’re with you.” He sniffles, high and hiccoughing, more tears crossing the bridge of his nose, pattering to the churned earth. Her own eyes are watering, seeing him like this. She tightens her grip in his ruined sleeve, tugs a little, and it encourages him up onto his elbow. “Vash,” she says again. “It’s all right.” It’s all right to need us, is what she means. It’s all right to rely on us. We can take it. I promise. His wet eyes flicker between her and Wolfwood and it’s clear he gets her meaning; his incredulity is too blatant for anything else. For the first time she notes a horrible scratch at his right temple, framing his orbital bone, blood starting to mingle with the rain, matting his dark hair. He fell from so high, for so long. It’s a wonder his whole body hasn’t shattered. More than it already has, anyway. “It’s all right,” Wolfwood echoes her, rasping, rough. His shoulder brushes Meryl’s, and heat rises in her throat and in her cheeks the same way it did when she clung to his narrow waist on the bike just a moment ago. “C’mon, needle-noggin. We got you.”
