What Ontarians need to know about ‘student achievement’ reforms that will run school boards like businesses All students and families will be impacted by cuts and provincial reforms being imposed on Ontario schools, and those who are already disadvantaged will bear the brunt.

“When public school is treated like a commodity to be optimized rather than a fundamental right, it’s a betrayal of the values of a system that should instead centre students and their learning.”

Excellent read! #OntEd

One day of hearings for a major education bill tells you everything you need to know. If Bill 101 actually met the needs of our community, the Minister wouldn’t be rushing it through. He’s only giving us 1 day because he’s afraid to hear that people don’t support his power grab.

When most teens are regularly missing school, we have a very serious problem. We should treat it like one The new government policy works on the questionable assumption that disengaged students will be responsive to marks-based incentives. It is trying to achieve behaviour change through punishment.

"Serious problems deserve serious solutions. The best solutions engage those who are most affected, pay attention to evidence, and take care to avoid harmful unintended consequences. So far, Ontario’s approach to absenteeism falls far short."

Attendance policies are ableist because they isolate children who may have a legitimate reason why they have missed school (appts, illness, etc)

They rarely bolster meaningful student engagement. Instead, they compromise student health & act as an unnecessary stressor

Someone should ask Ford where all the supports (in school and out of school) for students struggling with mental health, anxiety, learning disabilities, and special needs went.

The answer is, he cut them. We're seeing the effects in real time.

Hearing for 2 fired Toronto teachers will not be public, despite union effort Two longtime teachers at Bowmore Road Public School were terminated by the TDSB in January amid a major staffing shakeup, which saw eight other teachers suspended

NEW: A labour arbitration hearing over the firing this winter of two longtime teachers from Bowmore Road Public School won’t be open to the public. The teachers’ union pushed for transparency, but an arbitrator sided last week with the TDSB. #onted www.torontotoday.ca/local/educat...

We have students in #OntEd who regularly have meltdowns on Fridays because they don’t have enough food to eat at home over the weekend.

We have neighbours sleeping in tents in downtown Kitchener because they can’t afford rent.

But sure… I guess Doug Ford needs a private jet.

Just to be clear: we do not have money for textbooks in public elementary schools.

We make or buy our own books and resources, go to the library, and find videos and websites to use.

Some boards used to have consultants or resource teachers who made resources.

But they’ve been fired. #OntEd

If you’re going to name a bill "Putting Student Achievement First," you should probably mention students more than five times. Instead, "liability" shows up 43 times. It’s pretty clear where the priority lies, and it isn’t in the classroom.

"I wanted to make sure we removed the distractions that come from trustees from the system so the new roles of a trustee will be significantly reduced from what it was before," Education Minister Paul Calandra said at a news conference following the tabling of the bill.

"Vastly reducing their ability to disrupt the system, vastly reducing their ability to cause division in the system and refocusing them on what I am hearing, which is advocating on behalf of parents in the system."

"Democracy is a divisive, disruptive distraction!" is the implication here.

Education is not a business.

Schools are not factories.

Our children are not widgets to be churned out.

Do better, @fordnation.

School trustees aren’t perfect, but the Ford government’s supposed fix is worse The Financial Accountability Office found that real per-student provincial operating funding in 2024-25 was the lowest in the last decade.

"The new bill does not abolish trustees; it does something subtler. It keeps them in place while stripping away much of their power.... That is not democratic oversight. It is local democracy kept for show while real authority moves upward."

Tying attendance to marks is ABLEIST because it punishes students for circumstances beyond their control, failing to account for disability, chronic illness & unequal access to education. 1/2

Attendance policies assume all students are capable of attending in-person every day which marginalizes students with health conditions, mental health challenges or caregiving responsibilities

They privilege “healthy” people & those with “uncomplicated” personal lives. 2/2

‘A big f--- you to Toronto’: Trustees decry proposed TDSB changes The government has announced plans to slash the number of provincial school board trustees from 22 to 12, though the TDSB is the only board that would see a reduction

NEW: The province plans to slash the number of school board trustees from 22 to 12. But under that plan, only the TDSB will see a drop. The minister says the plan offers consistency across Ontario. But one trustee says it feels like a 'big f— you to Toronto." www.torontotoday.ca/local/educat...

Attendance to be worth up to 15% of Ontario high school students’ grades, exams required in most classes Education Minister Paul Calandra also announced that most secondary school courses will need to have exams, scheduled during a dedicated exam period,

Why Is our "small government" Premier micromanaging families in Ontario? Shouldn't families be able to decide if we let children miss school amd when? #onpoli #onted

Children are already struggling in oversized classrooms and this government's solution is to cut more funding resulting in even fewer teachers and education workers next year. It's clear the Ford government does not have our kids' best interests in mind.
