#Forestry and #timber businesses across the UK are being asked to take part in an annual survey programme to collect data about the UK timber industry.

Results from the surveys are used to understand the state of the timber industry and the balance between supply and demand. ⬇️

🧵 Just out in Cell after more than 10 years in the making!

Plants and animals evolve radically different body plans.

Do they also operate under fundamentally different molecular evolutionary constraints during organ formation?

Close-up photo of a head of flowers. The photo is annotated with brackets, arrows, and text. A bracket indicates the ray flower, and the text reads, “Ray flowers are zygomorphic.” Three arrows point to disk flowers, and the text reads, “Each disk flower is actinomorphic.”

You can have both kinds of symmetry on the same plant: This Ratibida pinnata (📷: Joshua Mayer CCBYSA2) has two kinds of flowers. Ray flowers are zygomorphic; disk flowers are actinomorphic. Of course, the Asteraceae are famous for this trait. #Asteraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

The leaves and acorns of an English Oak

The leaves and acorns of an English Oak

The Common or ‘English’ Oak (Quercus Robur) is the national tree of Germany. And obviously England

But also Poland, Romania, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Serbia & Moldova

In fact I do not have enough room to name all the countries…….

Key developments on the control of IAA metabolism in plant regeneration
graphic

Zhai and Xu (2021) and Zhai et al. (2023) showed that the middle cell layer of the callus is responsible for pluripotency acquisition. In this layer, WOX5/7-PLT1/2 up-regulates TAA1. High IAA may be required for pluripotency acquisition.

Sakamoto et al. (2022) revealed that IAA biosynthesis is induced before the first cell division of protoplasts to form callus.

Zhang et al. (2019) and Lee et al. (2024b) showed that JA-inducible ERF109 up-regulates the expression of ASA1. ESR1 directly up-regulates ASA1 and, in parallel, ESR1 represses JAZ5 expression, together promoting IAA biosynthesis.

Damodaran and Strader (2024) found that KMD2 degrades type-B ARRs and consequently blocks cytokinin signaling. In the absence of cytokinin signaling, TOB1 expression is down-regulated and thus facilitates IBA-to-IAA conversion, leading to de novo rooting.

Auxin biosynthesis and inactivation are dynamically regulated during plant regeneration. While synthetic auxin is often used to provoke regeneration in tissue culture, endogenous IAA is still often required - Maruyama & Ikeuchi

C'était aussi un être humain d'une grande gentillesse et d'une grande humilité. Il savait écouter, partager et se mettre au service d'autrui.

Tried it today for the first time and... I whole-heartedly recommend it! Easy to tinker with, saves at 300 DPI by default... It does the job of 3-4 packages I used to need. I had two faceting variables, so split_plot () didn't quite work, but I add_ed some ggplot2 code and voilà! #tidyplots #Rstats
