There's a mechanical weathering process known as frost wedging! Water that's permeated existing weaknesses in a rock face then freezes, forcing those weaknesses to expand and combine until it visibly splits the rock. Super common.

There are pokémon weaknesses based on MUCH less of a physical basis

Ice-type moves should be super-effective against Rock-types and Ice-type pokémon should resist Ground-types. Easy easy easy fix thatd make so much more physical sense
