A gentle reminder that many colleagues and pupils may not have had a lovely Christmas.
It might have been awful.
They may be very happy to be back where it feels safe, or where there's routine, or where there's company.
They may be dreading the question 'what did you do then' or 'what did you get?'.

What are your top 3 pictorial/visual models?

Answer either in a reply or quote, please also mention your setting. Feel free to make a whole thread with your reasons, should you wish!

I'd argue no. 1 is equally visual, in fact I use them more as a diagram to support e.g. simplifying (not necessarily drawing the specific algebra tile shapes but 'counters' labelled with variables.

Secondary: 1. Algebra tiles (including two colour counters in this as they're essentially the same) 2. Area model for multiplication and linking in to algebra/distributive law 3. Ratio tables for anything with a multiplicative relationship

No, we've got a high proportion of EAL and not encountered an issue. We teach the word with the place value table first

We use 'exchange' which most students have used at KS2. Thorough knowledge of place value feeding into the algorithm.
