I honestly think this is covered by our salary as PhD students (if there's one)/academics. For tenure positions it's often required in the contract.
It's also an investment and part of our education. We all become better authors by reviewing papers (and save time for future writing/applications).

Absolutely! In our group we also often share between PhD students (one more senior and one junior).

Reviewing is part of the job for academics. As long as we submit papers and require reviews for our own papers. It also helps in building CVs

Senior professors - if you want to help your junior colleagues in these times, I am begging you, review our papers. I have done 25 manuscript reviews in the last 6 years. But my own manuscript is stalled out waiting for reviewers. Relatedly, I won't be doing any more reviews until tenure. 🧪

Or at least involve PhD students (who are perfectly suited to review papers)! I do 5/10-ish a year myself some of which come from supervisors.

HomoTherm: An Open‐Source Approach to Modelling Heat Exchange in Humans and Other Hominins in Diverse Environments We present ‘HomoTherm’, a human heat budget model for simulating humans and related species with diverse traits in diverse environments. It is part of the NicheMapR package for biophysical modelling ...

You can now model human heat exchange in R (and via a Shiny app). I started work on this with Shane Maloney (Uni of WA) way back in 2014, with Duncan Mitchell (Uni of the Witwatersrand) joining us along the way onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... @globalchangebio.bsky.social @unimelb.edu.au

I do not use AI for writing. I like writing. Why would I farm out my favorite part of my job to a gdamn robot who takes no joy from it?

I only use AI for my wow-I'm-a-professional-scientist-and-I-still-don't-know-how-a-science-thing questions like "What are magnets and how do they work?"

AI and the PhD student: friend or foe? Graduate students increasingly use artificial-intelligence tools to draft, code and search — but many fear it could erode the very skills a doctorate is meant to build.

Totally agree! As I said in my interview to Nature, I spent years trying to become a PhD student and it's my dream job. Why would I leave it to AI? To save an hour and then go look at AI pictures on social media?

Check out this incredibly talented magpie. For about ten minutes, it channelled a seagull, a ruru🦉, a dog, an electronic car key, a car alarm, a human voice, the Android alert tone😂📱and more – most of which you can hear in this clip.

Quardle, ardle, oodle, wardle and furthermore, doodle. Amazing!🤩

Delighted to see our work on the cover of Systematic Biology!! We introduce an approach for analyzing pairwise-defined traits (e.g. 'strength of RI', 'diet niche overlap') in a phylogenetically informed context (R package 'phylopairs' now on CRAN). Read it here: academic.oup.com/sysbio/artic...
