The high-contrast nature of ornamental kale made this WAY too hard to use subtly. So I let it be loud.

The photos I take for the shape layers of my main series sometimes don't cooperate with the color plates I have on hand. For a while I had a "bin" of those rejected shape layers, until I started working on the paint series.

The "bin" file is now a valuable resource. Recycling!

"That particular pattern of wallpaper became associated with the death of whole families at the time."

"Was it is a plague that took hold at the time?"

"No, it was the wallpaper itself. It was a gift from the Duke on the hill. In the black castle. The one who is still alive."

"What is this? I've never seen this! And it smells good, too? How come I've never seen one before?"

"It took us so long to figure out the spell because it doesn't actually call for just a flower, but the memory of flowers. As a concept."

"Where do you get that?"

"You have to take it from someone's memories. Fortunately, they get to discover flowers all over again."

The Day the Peacock Took Acid

The Day the Peacock Took Acid

The Paint Series has become extra useful in helping rehabilitate some shape layers that don't really cooperate, as well as some glitch pieces that never made sense on their own.

Just because a piece doesn't make sense in one context doesn't mean it can be repurposed for another.

"When he walks in the room, just make sure you're not using any sight beyond your eyes. If you observe his aura directly, you'll go crazy instantly."

"He really just thinks he's that popular with women."

Digital black and white ink illustration, title at bottom: The Host of Anguish. The subject is a humanoid creature shown from the waist up, with at least 6 arms and a horse skull head on a long neck of stylized plant roots. More hands and arms are emerging from its expansive, twisting and tearing flesh to cover most of the lower half of the canvas. All of the hands are grabbing and reaching out as if in crisis. A large, deep hole is in its upper chest, torn flesh as its border. The piece is shaded using extensive, precise crosshatching.

Digital color illustration, primarily in muted blues and soft sage to yellow. Title at bottom: The Purveyor of Murmurs. A portrait of a humanoid wearing draping robes and jewelry. They have 6 fingers on each hand, a neck made of long flowing hair, and a head that is a deer-like skull with fangs. They have no lower jaw. They have twisting vine-like antlers. They are holding a staff whose shaft is twisting vines and is topped with numerous fingers in a layered flower bud arrangement.

Digital black and white illustration using intricate line work and crosshatching, title at bottom: Relent To Ruin. A humanoid figure lies at the bottom of the canvas, entangled in gnarled, twisting tendrils and roots. They are facing up and thrashing as their head, which is a horse skull, is being obliterated by many punching downward fists. The entity above them doing the punching is just a mass of arms and hands and fingers coming out of a center, with solid black fluid pouring out from its center into and over the broken skull. More black streams flow from the center straight out to the top and sides of the canvas, defying gravity.

digital black and white ink illustration, title at bottom: Ungrounded. A humanoid facing the viewer has a black hole for a face/head. Multiple hands surround and reach into the hole, pulling back in a radius. the hands turn into wavy roots or vines that extend out past the edges of the canvas. two arms embedded with roots grab the bottom of the "face" in a pose like they are reaching up and pulling down on the face, and their shape creates an upside down V that fills the bottom of the canvas. Any empty space not filled with roots or hands or arms is a chaotic, scribbled black. More singular roots come out from behind the bottom hands and curve down to disappear beyond the bottom of the canvas. the entire piece is shaded with extremely fine, detailed hatching and stippling.

"What Viktor was really onto had less to do with the fact that the human body runs on electricity, but that lightning is present in the beginning of all life on earth."

"What are you driving at?"

"My research proves lightning is just the earth's drive to make life!"

The fish-flower connection is also held up by these terrible bradford pears everywhere.

The fish-flower connection is also held up by these terrible bradford pears everywhere.

This Paint Series piece has fish energy. I don't know why, but that's what it makes me feel.

I like the set of colors that this one came out with and they feel organic and real, like a lot of flowers show. So the fish connection kinda falls off at that point.

What do these colors remind you of?

Magic history nerds might be annoying to talk to, but they can put together a solid defensive strategy.

Magic history nerds might be annoying to talk to, but they can put together a solid defensive strategy.

"Here's what modern mages never think about. They get so wrapped up in power scalability that they fail to consider defensive measures."

"If you take that blast in the chest, it's curtains!"

"Right, but they didn't protect the blast from time spells. You can watch it fly right by."

Humans can't appreciate anything in nature without weaponizing it. Even pollen.

"Functionally, the pollen was meant to keep the flowers safe from herbivores by slipping them through space-time."

"They would just end up somewhere else, not in the valley."

"But we have collected enough spores so that our troops can slip past the city's defenses."

BEWARE THE GLOBULES. GOTTA CATCH EM ALL.

I'm not up on all my Pokemon, but this Alternative Paint Piece kinda reminds me of one I've seen. Maybe it also looks like D&D monster.

Although not as colorful as many others, I like the way the lines interact, like seeing something horrific through frosted glass.

A digital illustration in the style of a block print. A humanoid figure wearing a red cloak stands next to a long, segmented creature that resembles a carrot. The creature’s body weaves in-and-out of dark bushes.

A digital illustration in the style of a woodcut. It depicts the upper half of humanoid figure whose “head” is a flattened organic shape. A serpentine creature delicately wraps around the figure’s arm and into an opening in their face. The figure handles the creature gently.

Today's post doesn't have a story, but a bit of a look into my process as it evolved.

When I started working on the paint series, I got used to some of the softening techniques and they helped me work out problems I had with some of the textures in my main series. One example is provided below:
