A title that says "Schedule". The schedule is stated as follows: "April 9th, What is CA?", "April 16th, What is turn design?", "April 23rd & 30th, Turn construction: How are the parts of a turn structured?", "May 7th, Reference: How do we refer to persons, places and time events?", "Break due to midterm exams!", "May 28th, Reference: How do we refer to persons, places and time events?", "June 4th & 11th, Preference: How do we design different action alternatives?", "June 18th, Formats: How do we design specific actions?", "June 25th, Special topics: Phonetics, multimodality, interactivity and social categorization", "Break due to final exams!", and "July 16th, Applied uses: How can a word make a difference?".

We included empirical texts and textbook chapters that cover turn construction, reference, preference and design, action formats, some 'advanced' topics (phonetics, multimodality, online construction and social categorization), and cases where word selection has practical/applied implications.

A title that says "What will we do?". A paragraph that says "Each week we will read a different text about the organization of turn design. And we will meet on Zoom to discuss it and share our thoughts, doubts, and understandings. Next, in the same meeting, we will have a data session – a space where we observe an extract with caution, putting our analytical skills into practice." Around the paragraph, there are various texts' titles: "Conversation analysis and social action", "The interactive construction of a sentence in natural conversation", "Grammar and social organization: Yes/no interrogatives and the structure of responding", "Turn design", "Should police negotiators ask to 'talk' or 'speak' to persons in crisis? Word selection and overcoming resistance to dialogue proposals", and "Notes on a conversational practice: Formulating place".

Each week we read a text about turn design, and we meet online to discuss it and share our thoughts, doubts, and understandings.

Next, we have a data session in which we put our analytical skills into practice. No need to force our noticings by relating them to the text discussed before.

A little subtitle that says "Elections edition". A cyan background with dots, lines and a text bubble.

👁️‍🗨️ Secuenciando is officially opening its 3rd season: "Designing turns, constructing actions".

This season's theme is turn design, covering diverse aspects of that area.

We will have data sessions in Spanish with current data from Peru's general election and its presidential debates.

💬 How we work:

We work through 'seasons' of regular readings and meetings. Each one lasts an academic term.

Seasons are themed, covering a specific topic or area of #EMCA inquiry. In the first two, we introduced CA and explored sequence organization.

In April, a new, third season starts!

💬 Who we are:

Secuenciando is a study group that holds weekly data sessions 🔎 and discussions of #EMCA literature. 📚

Data and discussions are in Spanish, and schedules usually follow South American time zones.

Entirely student-led, and mainly composed of undergraduate & graduate students. 🙌

Secuenciando just got its own BlueSky account!

Now, on this page, we will continue sharing updates on our study group — one devoted to learning, developing, and promoting conversation analysis locally in Peru 🇵🇪 and South America 🌎.

Personally, I’m very happy (and honored!) to say that Secuenciando’s main goal has been achieved so far: creating a space where undergraduate students interested in EMCA can engage with the literature and train their analytic eye together.

Next year surely comes with new surprises as well! :) (3/3)

We met weekly for two-hour sessions: one hour for reading discussions (mostly Schegloff’s 2007 book), and another hour for data sessions where we examined a single phone call in Spanish line by line. It was great to witness how our understanding of that event grew in complexity! (2/3)

@belvelvet.bsky.social, @bbasileg.bsky.social, and @gchavezlazo.bsky.social, thank you for your dedication to this endeavor! Promoting CA in undergraduate and graduate studies in Peru is no easy task, but we’re making it happen! 🙌

We’re also merging reading and data sessions so that knowledge and observation go hand in hand. Each week, we’ll read a chapter on sequence organization and begin by discussing its key insights. Then, we’ll dive into some data to explore any sequentially organized phenomena we may come across!

Naturally, we didn’t have time to get into the well-studied generic organizations of talk-in-interaction. That’s why we’re launching a second season! This time, we’ll focus on sequence organization, with special emphasis on adjacency pairs and expansions. Schegloff (2007), here we go!

Dear #EMCA community,
Secuenciando’s first season, “Intro to CA,” has successfully come to an end! We read a variety of papers and book chapters covering the fundamentals of Conversation Analysis and had the chance to immerse ourselves in a couple of data sessions in Spanish.

Hi everyone! My name’s Belen and I’m a Linguistics Student at PUCP 📍🇵🇪 With some dear friends and colleagues, we created an interdisciplinary group in which we study #ConversationAnalysis (AC), called “Secuenciando”. We started last term and we’re really proud of the work we’ve done so far :)

Dear #EMCA community,
I'm very happy to announce the foundation of a small study group devoted to Conversation Analysis in Peru, composed primarily of undergraduate and graduate students eager to understand the technicalities of naturally occurring social interaction.
