Could the object and its intended use shed some light on the people who were buried here? Is it indicative of gender and/or social status?

We’ll provide further updates as we continue with our post-excavation analysis!

Interestingly, one of the graves contained an unidentified metal object. It is roughly cylindrical and measures around 10cm long but is very corroded. Our intention is to identify the type of metal using X-ray fluorescence, before sending the object for x-ray and conservation to help us identify it.

These additional graves continued the southeast to northwest line of four that was found previously, and each contained a ring of stones which would have surrounded the deceased’s body, as well as a vague ‘shadow’ in the soil where the body had lain, but has since decomposed.

So far, the features have been mostly those of a Romano-British date, suggesting the site as having once been a small-scale agricultural settlement, with lots of enclosure/field boundary ditches and some ring gullies.

Thank you to Gloucestershire Archaeology Group for coming to see us!
