Okay so why was I the only one in the theater tonight who gasped when Ryan Gosling ran a centrifuge with two tubes in the whole thing, sitting right next to each other? Sorry was I the only scientist in the film society theater tonight??

Had a stellar time delivering my talk about satellite detection of whales 🛰️🪐🐋 at #osm2026 @agu.org if anyone around wants to chat during the last couple days or after the conference come find me or reach out!
Second death - despite the double digit calves being born to the North Atlantic right whale this season, even one death is one too many #narw #whaleconservation

In the opening ceremony the coverage mentioned that one of the athletes from Saudi Arabia first got into athletics as a way to be able to eat more! 🤣
Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 💪🔬👩🔬 Lucky to be surrounded by such brilliant women in my field! (Photo: Liam Brennan)
Having non-politicized career experts in the civil service, instead of political sycophants who don't know anything about the issues they working on, may seem like an abstract issue
But doing it the way we do it makes your life better, and the Trump/Project 2025 proposal would make your life worse
I have nothing but love for my friends and colleagues in science that are pursuing jobs overseas, but I hate hate hate the pervasive idea that academics and scientists aren't part of our communities and can just be shuffled around from institute to institute.
In #Iowa City, buses have been #fare-free since August 2023 and the results are impressive; ridership jumped, driving dropped by 1.8 million miles. 🚍🌍 The city council has now extended the pilot program after seeing faster boardings, fewer cars on the road. 🔄💨
Who are these courses for?
Researchers, students, labs, agencies — anyone using stable isotopes.

Why create two full stable isotope courses?
Because more and more people rely on isotopes — but very few get proper training in how to design studies, interpret data, or use tools like simmr or MixSIAR with confidence.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?
It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.
It makes me think of grassroots groups like the Saint John Community Coalition sjcommunity.ca that are using the principle of solidarity to make a better future
Stoked to see @tommorelloofficial.bsky.social tonight in Saint John! His music and message seems so fitting for a city and province that has been subject to the Irvings and had to struggle against an anti-union, anti-mutual aid, extractivist agenda for so long. Hope tonight is inspiring for all!
We're concerned about the SRSR motion requesting 25 years of disaggregated tri-council data. While we understand the data is intended to be anonymized, this wasn't explicitly stated in the motion – and the specific information requested could still enable re-identification when linked together.
Same here!
For #marinemammal lovers, @UBCBookstore now has #seal water bottles for sale! Very cute
In New Brunswick, seclusion rooms are used instead of intensive care units because of inadequate healthcare funding—this is what happens when ‘public safety funding’ is prioritized over collective community care.

"Their society maintained them in complete freedom from want, distractions, and cares. What they were free to do, however, was another question. It appeared to Shevek that their freedom from obligation was in exact proportion to their lack of freedom of initiative."
Reminds me of a quote from The Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin
Too many people confuse convenience with freedom.
Colleagues at Hatfield Consultants also put together a beautiful story map summarizing the novel use of #satellite #technology for #whale #conservation: storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/849a...

Our industry partners Hatfield Consultants and Alta ML made this amazing ESRI storymap to highlight what we did and the issues in right whale conservation that make this work important storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/849a...

Happy to announce our new article in @marinemammalogy.bsky.social on finding #rightwhales in satellite imagery using machine learning. Great collaboration with academia, industry, and conservation @cwf-fcf.bsky.social. #whalesfromspace #NARW
