the destruction of chattel slavery is one of the great accomplishments in our nation's history and the reason conservatives hate celebrating it is because doing so legitimizes the black counter-narrative of the united states

Sorry I totally missed this (have been off of the app this time!) but absolutely LOVED Sinners! I’m really curious about the vampire in the film in relation to race—a potential for a post-racial collectivity?? I haven’t read enough yet about the film but I want to explore this summer!

Tan Book cover with green and brown text. Upper right corner has a seventeenth century engraved image of a Black body that looks like classical sculpture with a white head. It is holding a sheaf of cane.

Feels wrong to celebrate while academia is on 🔥, but this week I got the lovely cover for my long overdue book *The Sweet Taste of Empire: Sugar, Mastery and Pleasure in the Anglo Caribbean* forthcoming from UPenn Press!

As a historian 🗃️ I was grateful to be encouraged to write this for @americananthro.bsky.social. It's important to me not to just write about #Haitian history or the history of US foreign policy, but also to try to redress the effects of our actions NOW.

🙏 for reading! #WelcomingWithDignity

THIS. So many 🤬s say “people shouldn’t have come illegally.”

These folks all came legally! But they’re changing the rules now on them - & these folks *put themselves on file* with the government by coming legally so they’re in worse shape than people who didn’t! 🤬💔🤬💔🤬💔🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

💔🤬💔🤬💔🤬

Just got the news from the agency where I volunteer with migrants.

No migrants this week, no shelter guests, no airport shifts. CBP is releasing NO ONE to us. Total shutdown.

It might change next week & a few might cross - but it's 💔for migrants & the staff who might lose their jobs.
