Liberton Local Place Plan outline map of area... Liberton and District Community Council survey (Local Place Plan) THE City of Edinburgh Council is currently seeking ‘Local Place Plans’ from communities such as that represented by the Liberton and District Community Council to feed into its wider planning guidance for the city, between 2030 and 2040. To that end, you are invited by the Liberton and District Community Council - to share your views in this survey as to how the district might be shaped in the future. You are invited to complete this survey by 30th April 2026, which will provide the Community Council the time to consider whether to organise other engagement exercises, including in-person ones. Please be reassured: your answers will be anonymised when compiling any reports, and all email addresses will be confidential and only used to communicate the survey results. We are, however, asking you to share your street address (not the number) and postcode so that it at least partly confirms you are a genuine resident of the area represented by the Liberton and District Community Council. That area is shown on the map below.

Thanks Scottish Canals for sorting out some of the roughest roots on the Union Canal towpath at Wester Hailes. Also adding the link at Harrison Park onto Ogilvie Ter. However some very bad sunken sections need sorted too please 🙏

Improvements to the Council Website 4.3 Following approval of the 2026/2027 Transport Capital Investment Programme officers will arrange changes to the Council website to improve availability of accessible information relating to transport programmes across the service. 4.4 It is expected the design and navigation of the website will be revised to include annual capital works programmes, where available, and supporting information to explain how Council investment strategies defined and implemented. Ultimately, it would be desirable to provide website navigation that allows residents and businesses to search for planned and programmed works by location or specific search criteria. 4.5 The content of website improvements is expected to include, but is not limited to, information relating to: • Roads and footpath resurfacing and improvements; Transport and Environment Committee – 2 April 2026 • • Street Lighting replacement and upgrades; • • Bridges and flooding schemes; • • Road Safety delivery programme; • • Local Traffic Improvement programme (local traffic mitigation projects); • • Traffic Signal schemes and upgrades; • • Tram investment and renewals strategy; • • Parking (bus lane camera upgrades); • • Public Transport infrastructure investment (bus shelters/real time etc); • • Active and Sustainable Travel Investment programmes; and • • Bus Priority projects 4.6 It is expected the necessary changes and improvements to the website could take a number of months to complete, with a range of available information introduced in phases. It is expected the
Improvements to the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process: 4.14 A further action relates to a review of the TRO process to make it more understandable and accessible for people to understand what orders are being promoted and to make the information and drawings easier to understand. 4.15 The statutory TRO process is a formal legal exercise and requires specific documents to ensure it is competent and the Council recognises that documentation in plain English can be made available to better explain the scope of the planned order. 4.16 Officers in the Traffic Orders Team recently introduced a “List of Measures” document that provides a clear explanation of each element of the respective TRO. 4.17 To further improve public communications officers are currently preparing new pages to be included on the Council’s website. The information, that should be available within the next six months, will provide a better explanation of the process with clear links to appropriate pages containing the list of promoted TROs, supporting information describing clearly how to submit comments or objections and relevant drawings etc. 4.18 The final element of the action related to providing councillors access to all existing TROs. Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide information for all operational TROs at this time. The TRO team procured and commissioned a new map based TRO system called Mapper in early 2025 with the majority of “non-moving traffic” orders now shown on the Streets map-based system. Further TRO Consolidation Orders will be required to update remaining historical written orders. 4.19 A more detailed report describing proposed TRO improvements is expected to be available at the June 2026 meeting.

Do you live in Bruntsfield, Marchmont, Sciennes, Merchiston, Churchhill, Polwarth, Shandon plus surrounding areas such as Morningside, Grange, Tollcross, Fountainbridge, Gorgie and Dalry? Complete this survey from @banzaiedinburgh.bsky.social on the future of South Central Edinburgh!
Somehow our streets have become taken over by vehicles. We’ve allowed the needs of motor traffic to dictate the experience of everyone getting around or hanging around on our streets.
🚗 💨 🚚💨 🚦
And children have lost out more than any of us. We can do so much better.

AT the top of the image is a photo showing a row of tenement houses with cars, trees and grass in the foreground. The headline says Our Neighbourhood in 2040. The text below reads: Edinburgh has something special. To south and west of The Meadows and Bruntsfield Links lie Bruntsfield, Merchiston, Marchmont & Sciennes - mainly sandstone tenements and terraced homes with well established local facilities. Please help us prepare a Local Place Plan* that captures: What works well, what we like about the place we live and work, What residents want in 2040 / vision for future developments, Ideas for improvements to achieve that vision.

I’ve had lots of contact about the Greenbank-Meadows Quiet Route 🚲 recently following the Standards Commission decision to censure two Cllrs over their participation in previous decision-making about the route 🙅♂️🗺️📍
At Thursday’s Transport committee I will be presenting proposals for next steps ⤵️

In fact, the existing one-way segment of Merchiston Ave (on the other side of Polwarth Gardens) will allow contraflow cycling soonish...
We learned that Merchiston Avenue is to be completely resurfaced in 2027. An earlier proposal for superficial treatment in 2026 was revised in light of the extremely patched and eroded state of the carriageway. This info not reflected in latest council docs, oddly. We will try to clarify!

No substantial road layout changes planned BUT, the council is considering our request to make the junction safer at Merchiston at Rochester terrace. We should know more after this week's TEC meeting!

Next Thursday 2 April, the City of Edinburgh council Transport and Environment Committee will decide whether to address safety issues at this junction. Over 100 residents have shared their views on the dangers. We hope CEC will follow through!

Living Streets Edinburgh Group are delighted that Edinburgh Council will reduce wait times for the ‘green man’ at 24 pedestrian crossings. This follows our on-street research of reality vs. council policy and subsequent call for a review.

📣 7/ MDCC is forming a residents working group to keep momentum going — we look forward to sharing updates soon!
🏘️ 6/ We believe this aligns well with the City Council's own strategy to reduce vehicle use and create liveable neighbourhoods. No quick fixes expected — but we're in it for the long haul.
🤝 5/ Cllr Jenkinson was receptive and appreciated residents' willingness to collaborate. He committed to following up with Ward 9 & 10 Councillors, and we will keep them updated.
📋 4/ Our ask to CEC: commit to an area-wide traffic study, so we can develop joined-up solutions rather than piecemeal fixes. Only a coordinated response can address longstanding underlying issues.
🗣️ 3/ We heard directly from residents living along these corridors, who shared their experiences, frustrations, and suggestions. A collective goal emerged: an area wide approach to make our streets safer and more liveable.
🛣️ 2/ The focus was on key corridors crossing the Union Canal: Ashley Terrace, Harrison Road, Yeaman Place/Polwarth Crescent/Merchiston Ave, and also Merchiston Grove — all affected by speeding, high traffic volumes, and HGVs cutting through residential streets.
🧵 1/ Here's a summary of the road safety and traffic discussions at our 17 March public meeting with Cllr Stephen Jenkinson, City of Edinburgh Council Transport Convener.
